Vietnam Vets Honored at Ceremony

Attendees at the United Veterans Council event on Monday morning at Town Hall were urged to 'think a little more' about sending troops into conflicts by the guest speaker.

Guest speaker Charles Brule of Barrington urged everyone to think a little more about deploying troops at the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12. The retired Army Reserve veteran said he did not want to politicize the United Veterans Council event that included the dedication of a plaque to Barrington's Vietnam veterans. But he said every political leader, no matter what party or leaning, needs to recognize that many service men and women come home in stainless steal caskets as the U.S. gets involved in conflicts overseas. He also encouraged veterans to run for political office to provide the perspective of someone who might have served overseas. The annual Veterans Day ceremony was held at the memorial at the Barrington Town …

Plaque to Honor Vietnam Veterans

Annual Veterans Day ceremony in Barrington will be held Monday at 11 am; Vietnam veterans to be feted with the mounting of a plaque on an empty stone at the Town Hall memorial.

You are invited to recognize veterans -- especially Vietnam veterans -- on Monday, Nov. 12, at a special ceremony in Barrington. The United Veterans Council of Barrington will again lay a wreath at the Honor Roll on the Town Hall lawn at 11 am. The veterans also will lay a wreath and mount a plaque that recognizes all Vietnam veterans on an empty stone at the memorial next to Town Hall, said Robert Smith, an active veterans council member and a Vietnam veteran. Monday's events will be similar to past years, except the Veterans Council chose to celebrate Veterans Day on the day set aside by the federal government, said Smith. Usually, ceremonies are held precistely at 11 am on Nov. 11 -- the exact end of World War I, which ended in 1918 on …

Do Veterans Get Enough Recognition?

Today, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day -- do America's veterans receive enough recognition for their service?

Today is Veterans Day, although it is being officially recognized on Monday, Nov. 12, by the federal government. Whichever day you prefer, it is a day for honoring veterans of  America's armed forces. But for millions of Americans, it's treated as just another holiday on the calendar – a day off from school, a day out of work, a three-day weekend. In towns and cities across America, grizzled veterans, Boy Scouts, politicians and a handful of others will attend small, quiet services. Is that enough? Do we as Americans do enough to recognize the nation's service men and women and the sacrifices they made and the responsibilities they took on to go to war or serve for us? Let people know what you think in the comment box below.

Everyday I wear my Vietnam Veteran's hat. Every day someone says thank you to me. Forty years ago, that is not what I would have heard if I had been foolish enough to wear that hat. To me, it is not what Americans do on one day to thank the Veterans. It is what they do every day. This is one veteran who does appreciate those thank you. In my experience, Americans do not wait for one day in …   more ›
