All liquor-license holders in Barrington are now in full compliance with the town's server-training ordinance; additional BAY Team training sessions were set up.
Every holder of a liquor license in Barrington is now in compliance with the server training ordinance. "Everyone is okay. They're all done," said Kathy Sullivan, program manager for The BAY Team, Barrington’s substance abuse prevention coalition, which offers both live and video training for servers. All license holders had all their servers trained by the Dec. 1 deadline applied by the Barrington Town Council at its November meeting, Sullivan said. That deadline was applied to make sure everyone was trained or face the possibility of having the liquor license revoked. Eight businesses or clubs were not in compliance at that time. "All new hires can take video training at the police station," said Kristin Wetmoreland of The BAY Team. "We …

The BAY Team in Barrington began handing out free cloth shopping bags this week to deliver a message while easing the transition from banned plastic bags.

At the same time, one bag at a time, the cloth carriers will deliver an alcohol and drug prevention message from the coalition: “Youth Shouldn’t Be Wasted.” A BAY Team logo accompanies the message. ”The ban on plastic shopping bags goes into effect in January, so the timing couldn’t be better,” said Kristen Westmoreland, program manager for The BAY Team. She describes the distribution of the bright blue bags as a “win-win for residents supporting local businesses and for spreading a positive prevention message.” The bags are available at Center ACE Hardware, Shaw’s supermarket, Verizon and …

A drug collection unit has been placed in the Barrington Public Safety Building lobby for the disposal of unwanted and expired prescriptions at any time, not just special take-back days.
A new prescription drug "drop box" has been placed in the lobby of the Barrington Public Safety Building on Federal Road. Expired or unwanted prescription drugs can be dropped in the unit at any time now by Barrington residents – not just on special drug take-back days. The drop box sits just inside the front door. Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said the unit is “an attempt to keep prescription medications away from children in town and to prevent water contamination by flushing such prescription drugs into the sewer system.” Instructions on what "shouldn't" be placed in the unit are typed on the front panel, LaCross said. “I only ask that if a person has a brown bag or other container with their drugs in it, that they should use a …

Members of BAYouth, Barrington High School’s chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, were out in full force early Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, trying to remind their peers about the importance of wearing a seatbelt. It was the annual fall campaign designed to convince all student drivers to wear their seat belts -- or possibly die in a crash like the one that killed a Barrington teen, Jon Converse, about five years ago who was not wearing the safety belt. See the video above of Converse's father, Dan, talking about his son's crash in front of a State Police simulator brought to the school two years ago. This year, the group conducted a visual check of all vehicles entering the school parking lots starting at 7 am, said Kathy …

"Next year we’ll start over again in a much more competitive environment with federal funds decreasing." The BAY Team is a coalition of local organizations and officials that work together to make teens more aware of the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse. It also offers programs on the safe use of social media and the Internet, and it helps parents to cope with teen issues. Sullivan is one of three …

Pupils at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington write, perform scripts on making 'positive choices' under the collaboration of The BAY Team and Arts Alive!
“If you give a little love, it will all come back to you. You know you’re going to be remembered for the things that you say and do.” Those lyrics were sung by the chorus in the finale of “Bugsy Malone,” an Arts Alive!-produced play performed a couple of weeks ago by students at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington. Many students at the school then took the challenge of writing their own two-minute scripts about spreading love with ideas suggested by The BAY Team, Barrington’s substance-abuse prevention coalition. The ideas swirled around “making healthy decision and positive choices,” said Kathy Sullivan, program manager. Among the ideas: Scripts were judged on how well they captured the meaning of the lyrics, said Sullivan. The winning …

Another drug take-back day last Saturday at the Barrington police station resulted in the best total ever.
The numbers are in. Almost 100 Barrington residents dropped off 143 pounds of unwanted and expired prescription drugs at a take-back day at the police station last Saturday. That total was about twice as much as the last take-back day about six months ago. "I think the message is out there," said Kathy Sullivan, BAY Team program director about the turnout, which was the best ever. The drug take-back day was coordinated by the police and The BAY Team, Barrington’s prevention coalition. Sullivan said she is pleased that so many people took the time to stop by the police station. Other turns holding take-back days last Saturday had much less to show for the day. Bristol had 60 pounds; Warren had 35 pounds. All of the drugs were turned over to…

It shows a willingness of these youth to change their habits for a cleaner environment as well as making positive choices for a …   more ›
