BAY Team Gets National Recognition

The Barrington substance-abuse coalition's beverage server-training program is now being shared on the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America's website.

The BAY Team substance-abuse coalition in Barrington is getting some national recognition for its beverage server-training program. The Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) picked the BAY Team’s “Alcohol Server/Selling Training – Make It Local” display as the best in the country at its national convention last January.  It’s now featured in a brand-new section of CADCA’s website called the Coalition Ideas Exchange, said Kathy Sullivan, program director. The display provided an overview of the local prevention coalition’s effort to utilize best practices in developing the training, she said. The training is now being shared nationwide on the CADCA website along with a podcast that features Sullivan and program manager Kristen …

Another Drug Take-Back Day Saturday

The BAY Team and the Barrington Police Department are hosting another opportunity to rid your home of unwanted and expired prescription drugs.

Empty your medicine cabinet of unwanted and expired prescription drugs on Saturday, April 27. The BAY Team and the Barrington Police Department are hosting another “Drug Take Back” day in the lobby of the police station on Federal Road. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm. All of the potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs will be picked by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and destroyed. The service is free and anonymous. No questions are asked. Drug take back days address a vital public safety and public health issue, according to Kathleen Sullivan, program director of The BAY Team. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse…

Students Asked to Kick Some Butts

Barrington High School's SADD chapter attempts to persuade student to stop smoking or never to start on 'Kick Butts Day' across America.

A group of students at Barrington High School attempted to persuade their fellow students to stop smoking – or never to light up – at the annual Kick Butts Day across America on Wednesday. The students -- members of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) -- staffed a table filled with temporary tattoos and gum and cookies and other give-aways that delivered the message about the evils of smoking. They also displayed just a few of the hundreds of chemicals found in cigarettes – such as insecticides and cadmium and other poisons. And they asked students to guess what percentage of students have not smoked in the last month. The winner won a tray of cookies decorated with an anti-smoking message. An award-winning video created by …

Students at Barrington High School will be kicking butts tomorrow, March 20. Cigarette butts, that is. It’s the 18th annual Kick Butts Day across the U.S. – an annual event in the fight against tobacco use.  The BAYouth students will be setting up a table in the high school lobby displaying all of the harmful chemicals found in tobacco, said Kathy Sullivan of The BAY Team, the substance abuse-prevention coalition in Barrington, and they will hand out temporary tattoos and chewing gum. The students also will air on the minotors in the lobby the public service announcements they filmed about the dangers of tobacco and the industry’s marketing practices that entice kids to smoke. Cut Access to Marijuana, Spread the Word That It Harms Kids

The BAY Team in Barrington is part of a coalition that will deliver this message to RI legislators today in a special briefing in the State House.

Rhode Island must reduce access to marijuana by children and focus on spreading the word that it is harmful as supported by medical evidence. Kathy Sullivan and Kristen Westmoreland, program managers for The BAY Team in Barrington, said this is the primary message to be delivered to Rhode Island legislators today at a special State House briefing. The briefing will be led by representatives of the newly formed Ocean State Prevention Alliance, of which The BAY Team is a founding member, said Sullivan. Two guest speakers also will brief the legislators on addiction and marijuana and how laws have an impact on taxing and regulating marijuana. More and more kids use marijuana as the perception that it is harmful decreases, said Sullivan, and …

Posters Show Dangers of Alcohol

Students at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington created messages for the community as part of the 'Protecting You/Protecting Me' health curriculum.

You can see their posters at Barrington stores, the high school, the police station, the library and the Town Hall. Each one sends out a message about the dangers of drinking and driving and the impact of alcohol on a developing brain. The posters were created by fourth- and fifth-graders at Hampden Meadows School. They are part of the “Protecting You/Protecting Me” curriculum at the school.  Kathleen Sullivan, program manager for The BAY Team in Barrington, said two health teachers at the school, Lauren Graham and Donna Cerio, have been using PY/PM “to teach essential knowledge and skills that help students make informed decisions.    “PY/PM helps reach children before they have fully shaped their attitudes and opinions about alcohol use …
