Roger Williams University hosted U.S. Sen. Jack Reed on Wednesday, May 1, to speak about the expected doubling of student loan interest rates.
Noting that more than 45,000 Rhode Island college graduates would face higher costs because of a scheduled doubling of the interest rate on student loans, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed told current students at Roger Williams University on Wednesday, May 1, that he is working to avoid the hike. "They rely upon this need-based financial aid in order to make it through school, and we are at a moment in history where we need all the talent and all the educated men and women that we can muster," Reed said in a speech at the Global Heritage Hall Atrium just before noon. "The reality is that, students today are graduating with tremendous debt. It's not only affecting us from an educational standpoint, but from a macroeconomic standpoint." Reed explained …

A Roger Williams University archival-research class unveils its historic findings at a presentation in the Barrington library on Tuesday evening.
Barrington got a history lesson Tuesday evening, Dec. 11, about some of its earliest citizens. Among the historical facts imparted by a Roger Williams University archival-research class at a presentation on the town’s industrial past in the Barrington library: The historical facts were part of a presentation titled: “People in Place: Manufacturing Households in Antebellum Barrington (1820-1860).” It was sponsored by the Barrington Preservation Society as part of its relationship with the Community Partnership Program at Roger Williams University. An archival-research class at Roger Williams University will unveil what they discovered about Barrington before the Civil War on Tuesday evening, Dec. 11.
"It's kind of a big detective story." That's how Nancy Austin, an adjunct professor of history at Roger Williams University, describes the research done by her class this fall on Barrington's "captains of industry" before the Civil War. The fifth of six significant issues of the 2012 Presidential campaign will be discussed tonight at 7 in the Barrington library auditorium by Barrington's Town Council president. June Speakman, a professor of political science and the head of the political science department at Roger Williams University, will talk about Super PACs. Her presentation is part of “Take Six: The Big Issues of 2012,” sponsored by the library and the League of Women Voters. Super PACs, officially known as "independent-expenditure only committees," may not make contributions to candidate campaigns or parties, but may engage in unlimited political spending independently of the campaigns, according to an explanation on Wikipedia. Dozens of Roger Williams University students complete community services projects in Barrington.
Dozens of Roger Williams University students spread out across Barrington Monday, Aug. 27, to clean up and do yard work and some landscaping at three locations. The effort was part of Community Connections 2012, which sent out 1,100 new RWU students out across the state to do community service projects. The students must participate as a graduation requirement. Faythe Herdrich, a 30-year member of Barrington United Methodist Church on Washington Road, said the university contacted the church. “We jumped at the chance,” said Herdrich, who coordinated the landscaping and cleanup effort at the church. “Especially because we’re part of the Destination Drownville tour of the preservation society.” Students trimmed bushes, pulled weeds, and …

Dobbyn Homestay is seeking host families in the East Bay for students from Ecuador who will be studying at the ELS Language Center at Roger Williams University.
The ELS Language Center at Roger Williams University is looking for East Bay area families to open up their homes to students from Ecuador. "We're always looking for new host families in the East Bay Area," said Sheila Dobbyn, a contractor who works on setting up home stays in the area. "Every month there are new students who come to the area to learn who need a place to stay." For the month of February, Dobbyn is seeking home stays for students between the ages of 14 and 17 that will stay from Feb. 5, through March 3. Anyone who opts to be a home stay provider will receive compensation of $775 for the month.
