The Barrington Recreation Department offers four days of activities at the middle school during February vacation week.
We know. It's February school vacation week next week. But kids between 6 and 12 might want to swing by the Barrington Middle School anyway. The Barrington Recreation Department is offering a variety of programs for four days -- Tuesday through Friday, Feb 19-22. Each day has a morning and afternoon session. Morning sessions run from 9:30 to noon; afternoon session runs from 12:30 to 3 pm. Michele Geremia, Barrington's director of recreation and leisure services, said there will be games, relay races, contests, arts and crafts, a Lego building contest, and introductory clinics in baseball, soccer and basketball. Proposed regulations for the use of tennis courts in Barrington revolve around teaching pros hogging the courts while local players kept watching.
The days of unregistered tennis professionals teaching for hours on Barrington’s courts while local players wait to play outside the fences – or don’t get to play at all -- appear to be about over. The Parks and Recreation Commission spent most of its Thursday night meeting – as it has at recent meetings -- rehashing proposed tennis court regulations that have been on the agenda for months. They got some new insight Thursday from Barrington teaching pro Tony Cunha, who teaches tennis for the Recreation Department in the summer. What do you think of changing Barrington's recreation director into a director of leisure services? The search is on.
Barrington’s town manager is searching for a part-time “director of leisure services” to take the place of the part-time recreation director. (See Patch story.) Several members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the retiring recreation director lashed out last week at the change in title and broader responsibilities for the position. (See Patch story.) They were particularly perturbed because the recreation commission has been proposing that the part-time recreation position be made full time. Meanwhile, Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. has decided to hire a leisure-services chief to create new arts, cultural and other programs for a broader segment of the community while creating stronger partnerships with existing youth sports …
