Motorists are asked to get off the roads as the storm intensifies. Up to 2 feet of snow is possible in Barrington and winds are expected to accelerate into the early evening.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee has declared a state of emergency, as forecasted snowfall totals continue to increase. Parts of Rhode Island could see as much as 30 inches of snow by the time the storm abates tomorrow afternoon. Barrington residents should be getting off the roads and hunkering down as the storm picks up steam. There is a very good chance Barrington will see 2 feet of snow, according to wpri.com, with areas from Providence and points north potentially getting more. "We have a very serious storm approaching," Chafee said. "I encourage all Rhode Islanders to take this seriously. This is a major storm. Be prepared." The Primrose Hill School is opened by RIEMA as a Red Cross-operated shelter.
An emergency shelter for anyone who has to evacuate their homes has been opened at Primrose Hill School in Barrington. The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) announced that the shelter is open to all Rhode Islanders who may need to evacuate. It was scheduled to open at 7 pm Sunday, Oct. 28. National Weather Service and RI Department of Environmental Management issue warnings with temperatures expected to reach into the 90s; RI Emergency Management Agency offers tips for coping with heat.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for today, which is expected to stay in effect through Thursday. Forecasters are predicting temperatures in the 90s with high humidity, creating a heat index of 100 to 104 degrees. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) also is predicting air quality that will reach unhealthy levels Wednesday in most of the state. DEM predicts that conditions will be at their worst in the mid to late afternoon as a "very warm and very humid" air mass will be present at that time. Regular RIPTA bus services will be free today.
