Town Eyes Grants to Improve Trails

The Barrington Town Council has endorsed two applications for state funds that would pay for improvements to trails in Veterans Park and the Hampden Meadows Greenbelt.

Barrington is going after a couple of state grants to improve trails for hikers in Veterans Memorial Park and the Hampden Meadows Greenbelt. The Town Council endorsed the applications for the $100,000 grants from the RI Department of Environmental Management last Monday. Barrington would have to provide a 20 percent match in funds or volunteer hours dedicated to the trails, said Town Planner Phil Hervey. Up to now, almost all of the trail maintenance and improvements in Barrington have been done by volunteers who enjoy the work, said Hervey. And they would still be involved. "But volunteers can only do so much," he said. “This is the first time we’ve sought funds to bid it out." The grants are known as "recreational trail grants." They are…

Mosquitoes Attacked as Larva

Barrington's Department of Public Works uses larvicide briquets in areas with standing water, such as ponds, ditches and catch basins, between May and late September.

Barrington attacks mosquitoes when they are in the larval stage under directions from the RI Department of Environmental Management. Larvicide briquets are used. The town does not spray. It’s described as an environment-friendly approach. “We’ve been doing it this way for at least 8 years,” said Alan Corvi, director of the Department of Public Works. “And we continue to do it. It’s nothing new.” Corvi explained how Barrington attacks mosquitoes because EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) was discovered in a sample of one mosquito pool, or sample, in a trap set in central Barrington on Sept. 5 by the Department of Environmental Management. The test results were announced Thursday. The larvicide briquets are dropped into catch basins, ditches…

EEE Found in Barrington Mosquitoes

RI Department of Environmental Management finds Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in mosquito pool in central Barrington; personal protection urged.

Test results from one mosquito pool, or sample, from a trap set in central Barrington has been confirmed positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), the Department of Environmental Management announced this afternoon. Central Barrington was described by Gail Mastrati, a DEM spokesperson, as the area that includes the Town Hall and the central business area. It is the fourth time this year that EEE has been positively identified in Rhode Island.  The positive EEE result was from a Culiseta species that feeds almost exclusively on birds, Mastrati said. The positive EEE finding came from mosquitoes trapped by DEM staff on Sept. 5 and tested at the RI Department of Health (HEALTH) laboratory. The results were confirmed today, Mastrati said…

High Heat, Ozone Alerts Issued

National Weather Service and RI Department of Environmental Management issue warnings with temperatures expected to reach into the 90s; RI Emergency Management Agency offers tips for coping with heat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for today, which is expected to stay in effect through Thursday. Forecasters are predicting temperatures in the 90s with high humidity, creating a heat index of 100 to 104 degrees. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) also is predicting air quality that will reach unhealthy levels Wednesday in most of the state.  DEM predicts that conditions will be at their worst in the mid to late afternoon as a "very warm and very humid" air mass will be present at that time. Regular RIPTA bus services will be free today. The Department of Health warns that unhealthy levels of ozone can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased …

Bridge Work to Start Next Summer

Delays have been generated by additional environmental reviews linked to raising the 'White Church' bridge over the Barrington River by two feet -- a request by the Town Council.

The state transportation department doesn’t expect to start replacing the Massasoit Avenue bridge near the “White Church” over the Barrington River until mid-summer next year – about  15 to 18 months later than originally planned. If that occurs, completion of the new bridge won’t be until mid-2015 – after two years of construction. “We’re optimistic we can advertise the project (for construction bids) late this summer,” said David Fish, managing engineer for bridge engineering for the RI Department of Transportation (RIDOT). “We expect to begin work by mid-2013.” As stated previously, said Fish, traffic will not stop during the work. “We’ll be keeping two lanes open at all times,” he said, “with the new span to be built just north (about …
