Consider donating blood as soon as possible; there's a blood drive coming up in Middletown with a Barrington connection.
Thanks to The Blizzard of 2013's traffic bans and power outages, the Rhode Island Blood Center missed about 600 blood donations, and they need your help to avoid running out. The organization is asking donors, particularly platelet donors, to consider donating blood as soon as possible, helping to avoid a blood shortage. “We lost two days to the blizzard and a quarter of our state was without power, causing lost blood drives and donation days,” said Frank Prosnitz, the Rhode Island Blood Center’s communications manager. “Not all power has been restored, jeopardizing some blood drives and certainly diverting donors’ attention to their own immediate needs." Pop Warner's second blood drive in the name of leukemia patient Emma Katzen, 12, draws scores of donors to RI Blood Center coaches at the Barrington Middle School.
Scores of donors gave 53 pints blood at the second drive held by Pop Warner and the RI Blood Center for Emma Katzen late yesterday afternoon and early evening, Aug. 1, in the lobby and outside the Barrington Middle School. Emma, 12, is the Barrington girl and Pop Warner cheerleader who is battling leukemia. She has been the recipient of numerous pints of blood, and Pop Warner has hosted two blood drives in her name to help replenish supplies. Two blood center coaches were filled most of the five hours they were parked outside the school on Wednesday.The blood donated, said Danielle Dunn, account manager for the RI Blood Center, "will help up to 159 patients in our community." Emma Katzen, 12, of Barrington is fighting for her life with leukemia; Pop Warner hosting blood and marrow drive for her
Another blood and marrow drive for Emma Katzen is coming up. Emma is the 12-year-old Barrington Middle School student who was diagnosed with leukemia late last year. She has been fighting for her life by undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments ever since. “There were no signs, nothing, just an ear infection,” said her mother, Christin Katzen. “You know, for a 12-year-old, everything is drama. We took her to the doctor on a Friday afternoon. We thought she had the flu, and we didn’t want to wait to go over the weekend.” A few hours later, her parents were told Emma had leukemia. Emma has crashed a couple of times, suffered through septic shock, and has had her body shut down with all her organs failing. But she has continued to hang on…
