The Parks and Recreation Commission decides to create a survey asking Barrington residents what types of new programs are missing and desired to help make a case for a full-time director.
The Barrington recreation board is continuing a push for a full-time recreation director -- with your help. The Parks and Recreation Commission decided last week to create a survey to determine what types of new programs Barrington users would like the recreation department to offer. “It will create a value base for a full-time person,” said Michael Seward, chairman of the recreation commission. “Once we do that, we’ll know what people want." Seward said the survey will focus on various categories of potential users of recreation and leisure services. “It will be very specific,” said Seward. “We’ll provide a list of programs, new things we think people might like.” After the recreation commission knows what people want, he said, “We can …

Proposed regulations for the use of tennis courts in Barrington revolve around teaching pros hogging the courts while local players kept watching.
The days of unregistered tennis professionals teaching for hours on Barrington’s courts while local players wait to play outside the fences – or don’t get to play at all -- appear to be about over. The Parks and Recreation Commission spent most of its Thursday night meeting – as it has at recent meetings -- rehashing proposed tennis court regulations that have been on the agenda for months. They got some new insight Thursday from Barrington teaching pro Tony Cunha, who teaches tennis for the Recreation Department in the summer. Cunha said professionals from outside of Barrington – even a tennis league – have been using the courts without registering or paying the appropriate fees. “The pros are coming,” Cunha said, “because the town has …

What do you think of changing Barrington's recreation director into a director of leisure services? The search is on.
Barrington’s town manager is searching for a part-time “director of leisure services” to take the place of the part-time recreation director. (See Patch story.) Several members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the retiring recreation director lashed out last week at the change in title and broader responsibilities for the position. (See Patch story.) They were particularly perturbed because the recreation commission has been proposing that the part-time recreation position be made full time. Meanwhile, Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. has decided to hire a leisure-services chief to create new arts, cultural and other programs for a broader segment of the community while creating stronger partnerships with existing youth sports …

The 'Sandy Toes 5K' to benefit the Bayside YMCA in Barrington has been cancelled; it was scheduled for Sunday morning.
The “Sandy Toes 5K” race scheduled for Barrington Beach on Sunday morning, Aug. 26, has been cancelled. Do not go to the beach to run. You might be the only one there. Do not go to Nayatt School, where participants could go to be shuttled to the beach. Gary Menissian, of Ocean State Multisport in East Providence, who was planning the road race to benefit the Bayside YMCA, said only about nine runners had signed up in advance. They have been contacted about the cancellation and their money will be refunded, he said. YMCA officials also told him that the road race could not be accommodated in their summer schedules at this time, Menissian said. So, he cancelled the race this week. “I will try to reschedule the race for the fall,” Menissian …

The Barrington recreation commission bid goodbye to retiring recreation director John Taylor Thursday night; several members lash out at the search for a 'leisure services' director to replace him.
The Parks and Recreation Commission said goodbye to Barrington’s retiring recreation director, John Taylor, on Thursday evening at the monthly meeting in the library. He retires Aug. 31. Several members of the board later in the meeting then lashed out at the decision made by the town manager to conduct a search for a “leisure-services director” to take over the duties handled by Taylor over the past five years. (See Patch story.) Taylor himself stated his frustration and concern about the impact of this change. “I have a problem with that,” Taylor said of the search for a director of leisure service set in motion by Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. “I still hope for a full-time professional with so much still to do.” In his final written …

Barrington Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. is looking to replace the retiring recreation director with someone who goes beyond traditional sports and recreation.
Barrington is looking to hire someone who can create new and build on existing leisure-time activities – not just organized sports and recreation -- that appeal to all members of the community. The part-time position will be known as “director of leisure services,” said Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. It will combine the duties of the retiring recreation director, John Taylor, with a host of new responsibilities. “It goes beyond the traditional recreation director,” said DeAngelis. “I want to expand on that.” “We already do a good job of offering sports activities for youth through Little League and Pop Warner and youth soccer,” he said. “The recreation director actually just schedules fields for them.” “I want someone who can build …

Retiring Barrington recreation director John Taylor may be replaced with a 'leisure services director'.
Barrington’s next recreation director may well be in charge of a lot more than the town's traditional recreational activities. Barrington is searching to replace John Taylor, the recreation director retiring at the end of this month, with a director of leisure services, according to an advertisment posted in July. Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. said the new recreation director will still oversee the town’s traditional recreational activities, according to a story in the Barrington Times. But it also will oversee the planning, directing, staffing and evaluating of municipal leisure services for all segments of the population. The new leisure services director will still collaborate with the Parks and Recreation Commission, DeAngelis said…

Recommendation and job description from Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission expected to go before the Town Council in the early fall.
Barrington’s part-time recreation director, John Taylor, steps down from the position in a couple of weeks, and the town is advertising for someone to take his place. Taylor’s replacement could be Barrington’s last part-time director. “We will be recommending a full-time director,” said Michael Seward, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the subcommittee that has been looking at the position as a full-time post. “It won’t happen right away,” said Seward because there is no funding in the budget for a full-time director this year. And the recommendation probably won’t go to the Town Council at its summer meeting on July 30. It will probably happen in September. “We’re waiting for the human resources director to draft a job …

The Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission endorses the current playing field maintenance program that relies primarily on synthetic grass-growing products.
The Parks and Recreation Commission endorsed Barrington’s playing field maintenance program Monday night, July 2, which relies primarily on synthetic materials to grow grass. With the endorsement, the commission rejected a proposal by the Conservation Commission to begin fertilizing and managing playing fields primarily with organic pesticides and herbicides. The BEST (Barrington Environmentally Safe Turf) proposal was sent to the recreation commission by the Town Council for evaluation and a recommendation after it was presented to the councilors by Cynthia Fuller, chair of the Conservatino Commission. The board voted unanimously to stick with the current field management program after more than 90 minutes of review and a presentation by…

Thanks Fred! There was a time when people would move into Barrington, drop their kids into the school system, and then leave with a profit when the last child finished high school. The numbers always seemed to favor this model. From 1998 to 2007, the median home appreciation in Barrington came in at 144% growing from $180,000 to $440,000 respectively. But from 2007 to August of 2012, the median …   more ›
