Town Can Control Bay Spring Erosion

Barrington can protect the Latham Park and Shore Drive shoreline from more erosion, according to an engineer who presented several options Tuesday evening.

The Latham Park shoreline in Bay Spring – perhaps a big chunk of that part of Barrington as well -- might have disappeared if Superstorm Sandy had tracked northeast instead of northwest in late October. So, no matter what Barrington does to control the decades-long erosion problem along the Latham Park and Shore Drive shoreline, it will probably never be enough to withstand such a severe onslaught of weather when it comes. There are low-maintenance options, however, that can control erosion once and for all at Latham Park, according to Amy Hunt of EA Engineering, Science and Technology. The company has a contract with the town to protect the park and that slice of Barrington from day-to-day waves – not a superstorm. The engineer presented …

Reminder: Shoreline Session on Tap

EA Engineering will present its recommendations to halt erosion at Latham Park and nearby Shore Drive in Barrington on Tuesday evening, Dec. 11, at the Bay Spring Community Center.

A reminder if you live in Bay Spring: The engineering firm coming up with some ways to stop erosion at the Latham Park shoreline in Barrington will present their recommendations at a public meeting tomorrow night, Dec. 11. The meeting will run from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Bay Spring Community Center on Narragansett Avenue. EA Engineering, Science, and Technology Inc. has been identifying and evaluating measures to protect the Latham Park area from further erosion. An erosion study that includes suggestions for “a living shoreline, rock revetment repair, and new rock revetment, as standalone alternatives or combined with beach nourishment," will be presented. The engineers are recommending these options, according to the study, “due to the …

Ways to Keep Park From Washing Away

EA Engineering is holding a public meeting next Tuesday, Dec. 11, to present some recommendations for controlling erosion at Latham Park and Shore Drive in Barrington.

Controlling erosion at Latham Park and along Shore Drive in Bay Spring has been a decades-long problem. Next Tuesday evening, Dec. 11, the engineers hired by Barrington to come up with some measures for finally stopping erosion at the shoreline will present their recommendations at another public meeting set up in advance of going before the Town Council. The presentation will take place in the nearby Bay Spring Community Center. It will run from 5:30 to 7 pm. EA Engineering, Science, and Technology Inc. engineers have been identifying and evaluating measures to protect the Latham Park area. The concepts the firm is recommending in an erosion study include “a living shoreline, rock revetment repair, and new rock revetment, as standalone …

Factor in Higher Tides For Erosion Control

Options to deal with erosion at Latham Park in Barrington are expected to go before the Town Council in early fall; rising tides, soil composition will have major impact.

Several options to deal with the erosion at Latham Park in Bay Spring -- with their price tags -- are expected to be presented to the Barrington Town Council in September. Those options will need to take into account the continuing rise in sea level -- a 3- to 5-foot rise by 2100, said project manager Andy Lipsky, of Barrington. Lipsky is a senior scientist for ocean planning and ecosystem restoration at EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., the consultant hired by the town to come up with solutions. In short, the rise in sea level, which has been happening since 1939, will mean higher high tides and the potential for more damage from storm surge. The erosion-control options also must consider that the park sits on top of soil …
