The Way We Work: Graduating Job Hunters Play Waiting Game at Home

In a difficult economy, many graduates return to their childhood homes looking for work.

Many college graduates are finding themselves in a decidedly retro phenomenon -- economic independence starts from the security of their parents' homes. "What seems to be changing is not that kids are returning home for a while after college, but how long they are living at home before they can leave," said Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Long Island's Hofstra University. That could have widespread implications for local communities. It is tough for graduating seniors, no doubt. But part of the problem is expectations that people roll into life after graduation. In my early 20's (40 years ago), I was generally covered in dust on the weekends from the home I was restoring, and working during the week. What's Open, What's Closed Today?

Barrington schools, Town Hall, library, post office and all government officers are closed today; many businesses and restaurants are open.

Today is Labor Day. The day is celebrated as a public holiday in Barrington. But not everybody is shutting down. For some businesses, in fact, it will be business as usual. So, you’re in luck if you’re celebrating with your final cookout of the summer season and you need some last-minute supplies. What is open and closed today? Barrington Town Hall is closed. The Barrington schools are closed, and day care centers in town are shut down today, too. The Barrington library is closed.  So is the Senior Center and TAP-IN, which operate in the same building.
