Donohue is doing all the cooking and donating two weeks of her pay to buy the food. Lots of Local Heart for Sandy Victims

Grapes & Grains and Heartworks team up to collect much needed supplies for victims of Superstorm Sandy in northern New Jersey.

Victims of Superstorm Sandy in northern New Jersey got some much-needed supplies of clothing, food, water, blankets and other items straight from the heart of Barrington last Thursday. Grapes & Grains and Heartworks of Barrington collaborated on a drive to collect items for victims of the storm in the town of Rumson in Monmouth County, NJ. Rumson sits southeast of Staten Island not far from where the hurricane made landfall. The location was selected because the liquor store’s general manager, Peter Andrews, has a former girlfriend whose family lives there. The items were driven there on Thursday, Nov. 8. “It’s a town very much like Barrington,” Andrews said. “Places in that town, like some of the bars and restaurants where we used to hang…

Employees help out, and you can, too

AG Warns About 'Sandy' Profiteering

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin reminds all retail sellers, whether individual business owners or corporations, not to try to profit from the storm.

The following is from a press release.  As Rhode Islanders continue to clean up from Superstorm Sandy, RI Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin reminds all retail sellers -- individual business owners or corporations -- not to try to profit from the storm.  Rhode Island General Laws 6-13-21 broadly prohibits all retail sellers from increasing prices of any item immediately prior to or during a declared state of emergency by an amount that represents an unconscionably high price. The maximum penalty for those found to have violated the statute is a fine of not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) per violation with an aggregate total not to exceed twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) for any twenty-four (24) hour period.  “While we have …

Power Restored to Barrington

By early this morning, Nov. 2, National Grid had restored all power to Barrington customers.

Every household in Barrington should have its power restored. National Grid reports on its RI outage map this morning that there are no more outages in Barrington. Late yesterday, Nov. 1, there will still a few customers still without power and an estimate that each customer would have their electricity restored by earlier today. Full restoration of power took a few days after Superstorm Sandy sideswiped Rhode Island on Monday. Although the storm caused far less damage than anticipated in the East Bay, it did knock down branches and a few trees, which pulled down electrical wires.

Superstorm Sandy Relief: How You Can Help

Here is how donations from East Greenwich can aid victims in most affected areas.

Barrington was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but Rhode Island ocean communities were not so lucky and, of course, those in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut were also hit very hard. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. In Rhode Island, if you are interested in volunteering, contact Serve Rhode Island. To donate, RI Emergency Management recommends donations be made to a recognized volunteer agency of the individual's choice or you can call 2-1-1. Donations may also be made through the National Donation Management Network (NDMN). Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers…

Power Still Out for 33 Households

As of this morning, National Grid reports that 33 'customers' in Barrington still had no electrical power even as cleanup efforts continued.

Cleanup from tropical storm Sandy continued in Barrington on Wednesday even as 33 National Grid customers scattered all over town still had no electrical power as of this morning. Most of the outages also did not have a repair crew assigned, according to the National Grid power outage map for Rhode Island. So the time for the estimated restoration of power -- shown as 6 am on Nov. 2 -- seemed to be just that, an estimate. The number of actual outages actually more than doubled during the day on Wednesday, then dropped by about a hundred overnight. The number of National Grid customers remained at about 33 with each of the 20 or so outages having an impact of no more than a household or two. While Barrington residents waited to get their …
