The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society recognizes the school as the top fundraiser in RI.
Hampden Meadows School students with their watermelons as they prepare to celebrate being the top fundraising school in Rhode Island for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients campaign. Pupils at the school raised $6,845.23 this year and have raised more than $18,000 since 2009 to help find a cure for blood cancers. By pooling their change, students in 204 RI schools are expected to raise nearly $310,000 this year to help find a cure for the leading fatal cancer of children ages 1 to 20…leukemia. A Hampden Meadows School teacher has been recognized as a digital technology “star.” Carrie Clegg, who teaches fourth- and fifth-graders at the Barrington school, has been named a STAR Discovery Educator by Discovery Education, a digital media and technology network. Clegg was cited for her “commitment to harnessing digital learning to inspire students’ curiosity and prepare them for future careers.” STAR Discovery Educators are active members of the Discovery Educator Network (DEN), a global community of educators who are passionate about teaching with digital media and technology and sharing ideas and resources. The Hampden Meadows School PTO is again collecting used sporting goods for its annual sale in March.
This story ran previously on the eve of the Blizzard of 2013, when everything got a little frenetic and the power went out for a couple of days. You might have missed it so we repeat it here. Students at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington created messages for the community as part of the 'Protecting You/Protecting Me' health curriculum.
You can see their posters at Barrington stores, the high school, the police station, the library and the Town Hall. Each one sends out a message about the dangers of drinking and driving and the impact of alcohol on a developing brain. The posters were created by fourth- and fifth-graders at Hampden Meadows School. They are part of the “Protecting You/Protecting Me” curriculum at the school. Nayatt and Hampden Meadows schools in Barrington participated recently in an “Adopt a School” program to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy on Long Island NY. Nayatt’s traditional “Giving Sleigh” was filled with toys, gifts and supplies that went to students of West Gates Elementary School in Lindenhurst, according to Kerry Payne of the Nayatt PTO. At Hampden Meadows, school supplies, gift cards and many other necessities were collected to help the Harding School in the same town, Payne said. “PTO volunteers from both schools packed up over 50 boxes filled with a wide range of items for the children,” she said. “Through the generosity of the Cregan family company, Contractors Supply, coordinated with Mark Greene, and JSA, Jewelers …

Barrington students finished #1 overall in the latest New England Common Assessment Program science tests.
Barrington Superintendent of School Michael Messore was not really surprised by the NECAP science scores released by the Rhode Island Department of Education last week. The New England Common Assessment Program test scores put local students on top overall and in two of the three grades tested in Rhode Island. “I know that we made some significant gains this year,” Messore said. “I’m very happy about that.” Barrington’s #1 overall ranking was earned with 7 out of the 10 fourth-, eighth- and 11th-grade students who took the assessment test scoring as “proficient with distinction” or “proficient.” The two older classes of students ranked #1 in Rhode Island with 70.5 and 68 percent proficiency, respectively; the Hampden-Meadows fourth-…

Work on new sidewalks and a bike lane on Kent Street leading to Hampden Meadows School in Barrington is expected to finish next week.
Students at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington will have a much safer road to walk or bike along by the end of next week. Workers for Manuel R. Pavao Contractor have been laying concrete sidewalks along Kent Street between Sowams and New Meadow roads and around the school since students went home for the summer a few week ago. “We expect to finish the work next week,” said Jason Pavao, project manager. “We had an Aug. 13 deadline.” A subcontractor will then come in and stripe the road for the bike lane, Pavao said.
