The YMCA in Barrington will receive a quarter-million dollar 'challenge gift' if it can raise a $250,000 match by May 1.

The Bayside YMCA in Barrington faces a new 12-week financial challenge.  Jim Berson, CEO and president of the Greater Providence YMCA, which owns the local facility, laid out that challenge on Thursday morning, Feb. 7, during an abbreviated tour of the new wing under construction. “We have received a quarter-million dollar challenge gift,” Berson said. “And it’s time-sensitive. We need to make a quarter-million dollar match by May 1.” The challenge gift came from a group of YMCA supporters, he said. Now it’s up to the Bayside YMCA to match it with gifts and pledges of $2,500 or more.  “We cannot do this without the community,” he said. “We must raise this so the next generation can take advantage of this facility.”  Bayside YMCA Executive …

Now Michonski puts shoes back together and tweaks them for clients as a certified pedorthist – a physical therapist who specializes in feet and making sure shoes fit a person's feet. He showed off his array of orthotics and custom-made shoes at a table set up by Olympic Physical Therapy & Foot Orthotics in the gymnasium. Michonski was busy answering questions and evaluating feet at the Older Adult Day. He also talked over lunch about “Putting Your Feet First.” "Most people don't wear the right size shoes," he said. YMCA Pool to Stay Open Until May 1

A reorganized construction schedule will allow the Bayside YMCA to keep its swimming pool open until the spring.

Swimmers at the Bayside YMCA are much happier campers today. The pool will remain open until May 1. That news sparked multiple emails to Patch Thursday. Joe Martino, executive director of the Bayside YMCA, said: “We have been guessing when we need to close it down for construction. We’ve guessed wrong twice. We decided that we didn’t want to go month to month.” The YMCA is building a new aquatics center as part of its expansion. A construction schedule that has been reorganized will involve work and demolition in other parts of the building first, Martino said. The building timetable remains approximately the same. The YMCA is ready to start construction even though it still needs approval of the construction process from the RI Department…
