Today is the Fourth of July, so all government offices are closed. But some stores and restaurants are open.
Today is the Fourth of July. The day is celebrated as a public holiday in Barrington. But not everybody is shutting down. For some businesses, in fact, it will be business as usual. So, you’re in luck if your’re celebrating with a cookout? Or heading on down to Bristol for the parade? And you need some last-minute supplies. What is open and closed today? Barrington Town Hall is closed. The Barrington schools are closed for the summer, of course, and most day care centers in town are shut down today. The Barrington library is closed. The Fourth of July in Barrington has been celebrated for decades with private family functions or events at the yacht club or country club. No public patriotic events. So, if you want to celebrate the Fourth with thousands of other 21st-century patriots, you'll have to look south toward Bristol. “There simply has not been a major public celebration, probably because of the festivities in Bristol,” said Carole Villucci, director of the Barrington Preservation Society museum. Barrington has never sanctioned a fireworks display; town officials ask you to leave your fireworks at home if you go to Barrington Beach tonight or Wednesday to celebrate the Fourth of July.
Leave your fireworks at home if you plan to celebrate the Fourth of July on Barrington Beach. “Out of respect for everyone using the beach,” said Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr., “we ask you to refrain from using fireworks on the beach.” The town has never sanctioned a fireworks display, DeAngelis said. But it has no problem leaving the beach open an hour or so later on the Fourth of July so anyone who wants to watch fireworks displays across the bay can do so. The beach normally closes at 9 pm.
