YMCA Holding 'Aquatics Job Fair'

The Bayside YMCA in Barrington is looking for lifeguards and swimming instructors for its outdoor and new indoor pools.

  The Bayside YMCA in Barrington is holding an Aquatics Job Fair on Thursday, May 16. It runs in two sessions: from 10 am to 12 pm and again from 6 pm to 9 pm at 70 West St. The Y is hosting the Job Fair to fill positions for lifeguards and swim instructors at the brand new Collis Family Aquatics Center expected to open next month. Experienced summer and year-round staff are needed for both the indoor and outdoor pools. Lifeguards need a current lifeguard certification, CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen. Gifts to 'Y' Help Your Neighbors

Letter to the editor submitted by the co-chairs of the Annual Campaign for the Bayside Y.

In August, our community will have a beautiful new indoor pool at the Bayside Y, with more lanes, a dedicated pool space for families and older adults, new locker rooms and other general improvements.  Many members of our community have or will provide gifts to our Capital Campaign to support the construction of this wonderful new facility.  With our outdoor pool available for summer memberships, and childcare for Out-Of-School time as well as summer camp with swimming lessons and specialty programs like kayaking and horseback riding, our new Y will be an even more vibrant part of our Bayside community! This letter is, however, about helping our neighbors.  Every year, folks in our community help their East Bay neighbors afford membership …

Bayside 'Y' Faces $250,000 Challenge

The YMCA in Barrington will receive a quarter-million dollar 'challenge gift' if it can raise a $250,000 match by May 1.

The Bayside YMCA in Barrington faces a new 12-week financial challenge.  Jim Berson, CEO and president of the Greater Providence YMCA, which owns the local facility, laid out that challenge on Thursday morning, Feb. 7, during an abbreviated tour of the new wing under construction. “We have received a quarter-million dollar challenge gift,” Berson said. “And it’s time-sensitive. We need to make a quarter-million dollar match by May 1.” The challenge gift came from a group of YMCA supporters, he said. Now it’s up to the Bayside YMCA to match it with gifts and pledges of $2,500 or more.  “We cannot do this without the community,” he said. “We must raise this so the next generation can take advantage of this facility.”  Bayside YMCA Executive …

New Year's Resolutions to Consider

The Bayside YMCA in Barrington suggests resolutions that build and maintain family connectedness.

  Have you made New Year’s resolutions? Here are several from the Bayside YMCA that are designed to strengthen your spirit, mind and body while building and maintaining family connectedness. “At the Y, we are committed to strengthening individuals and families to build stronger communities,” said Joe Martino, Bayside’s executive director. “When making New Year’s resolutions, we encourage people to begin with small changes that are easy to sustain and that lead to big benefits over time. Also, set goals as a family to learn and thrive together.” There are also five simple things families can do at home to improve their family’s health and well-being.

YMCA Aquatics Center Rising

New England Construction has poured the concrete shell for a new 6-lane swimming pool and exterior blocks walls have gone up.

The Aquatics Center for the Bayside YMCA expansion project is starting to take shape. Block walls are up around the concrete shell for the six-lane swimming pool. Crews for New England Construction have connected the new building to the old. "They connected it in one day," said Joe Martino, executive director for the Bayside YMCA. The new Aquatics Center also will add a family splash area. The overall project will add new men’s and women’s locker rooms, family and special needs locker rooms, a wellness center within the fitness center, an upgraded and expanded lobby area, and improvements to the field house. Memory Changes With Aging -- What's Normal, What's Not?

Doctor, psychologist who specialize in Dementia and Alzheimer's offer insight on what you can do to cope with and ward off memory loss.

Dementia is not a disease, says Dr. Bruce Abbott, medical director of neurology at Southcoast Brain & Spine Center in Dartmouth, Mass. “We tend to ‘medicalize’ everything,” Abbott said in a session on what people should know about Alzheimer’s and Dementia on Monday afternoon, Dec. 3. “Most people with Dementia live lives that aging creates,” said. “Memory changes with aging.” “You can be competent for one thing and lack the capacity for something else,” said Dr. John Dorn, a psychologist who specializes in neuropsychology for Southcoast. Jingle While You Run in Barrington

The first 'Jingle Bell Run' is slated for Sunday, Dec. 9; the 'fun run' will follow a short course starting and ending at the Bayside YMCA.

Expect quite a few bells to be jingling in Barrington on Sunday, Dec. 9. The first “Jingle Bell Run” will be held starting at noon. It is sponsored by the Barrington Business Association and the Bayside YMCA. “It’s a fun run,” said Lois Coppolino, co-director of the business association. “All families will get bells to jingle.” You can run with your pets if you like. Holiday costumes for everyone are optional. The run also will raise some funds for TAP-IN to help the nonprofit refill its shelves and get ready for the holidays, she said. The course will start at the YMCA parking lot, said Holly Smith, the other co-director of the BBA. Join Trails Team; Stay Safe From Falls

Join Barrington’s new Townwide Trails Team. The organizational meeting of this new group starts at 7 pm in the Council Chamber in Town Hall. The Bayside YMCA presents a free talk, "Keeping Mom and Dad Safe from Falls,” from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Barrington library auditorium. The talk also kicks off a new class at the YMCA titled "A Matter of Balance." A weekly farmers’ market operates at Haines Memorial State Park in Barrington from 2 to 6 pm every Wednesday. Love to knit? Join the Knitters Group at the Barrington Senior Center every Wednesday at 10 am. Al Anon, the weekly meeting of adults who were raised in alcoholic homes, meets at St. James Lutheran Church, 49 Middle Highway, at 7 pm.

Keeping Older Adults Safe From Falls

The Bayside YMCA offers a free talk on Wednesday evening, Sept. 19, in the Barrington library that kicks off a class, 'A Matter of Balance', during Fall Prevention Awareness Week.

Falls are a leading cause of deaths, unintentional injuries, and hospital admissions for trauma among older adults. Falls can take a serious toll on older adults’ quality of life and independence. So, the Bayside YMCA  is presenting a free talk, "Keeping Mom and Dad Safe from Falls,” on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. It will be held in the Barrington Public Library auditorium, according to Kim Stowell, communications manager at the YMCA. The talk is being held during the first week of fall each year -- known as Fall Prevention Awareness Week. At the heart of this initiative is the message that falls are preventable, Stowell said. 'Townwide Trails Team' Forming

Volunteer if you can help to improve the parks in Barrington. An organizational meeting of volunteers who want to serve on a "Townwide Trails Team" will be held next Wednesday evening, Sept. 19. The meeting runs from 7 to 9 pm in the Council Chamber in Town Hall. Recent projects and hikes at Veterans Memorial Park have been the work of a partnership with the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, Town of Barrington, Barrington Conservation Commission, Barrington Preservation Society, Bayside YMCA, Boy Scouts, Friends of Legion Way, and the National Park Service's River and Trails Program, said Helen Hersh Tjader of the Barrington Land Conservaton Trust.
