Another Local Brew Coffeehouse will be held Saturday, April 6, at the Bay Spring Community Center in West Barrington.
No fooling, there will be another Local Brew Coffeehouse in West Barrington on Saturday night. The Bay Spring Community Center hosts another concert, titled "April Fools," to help raise money for the renovation of the second floor. Doors open at 6:30 pm for the 7 pm concert. The community center is located at 170 Narragansett Ave. The musical lineup includes acoustic guitarist and singer Scott Baer; MeccaLily, a renowned quartet; singer and guitarist Mark Bowle, and Bay Spring Folk, Barrington's own folk quartet. Local poets Stan D'Angelis and Karen Donovan will read some of their poetry as well. Tickets are $5. Children 12 and under are free. Coffee and pastries will be sold. Barrington Town Council holding special meeting tonight on proposed tax deferment for seniors and a contract to make the Bay Spring Community Center second floor accessible to disabled.
A proposed senior tax deferral and a contract to further renovate the Bay Spring Community Center are the focus of a special Barrington Town Council meeting tonight, March 18. The town councilors also will appoint a new director to the Bristol County Water Authority and a member of the Ad Hoc Taxation/Assessment Advisory Committee. The special meeting starts at the same time and in the same place as regular Town Council meetings: 7 pm in the Council Chamber in Town Hall. The councilors called the special meeting primarily to assess the concept of a tax deferreal as a whole and various options presented by Finance Director Dean Huff at the March 4 meeting. Bids to add a lift to the exterior of the Bay Spring Community Center to make it ADA compliant to go to the Barrington Town Council on March 4.
Work on making the Bay Spring Community Center in West Barrington completely accessible to the handicapped could start in the spring. The work primarily involves installing a "lift" with an enclosure to an outside wall of the former fire station on Narragansett Avenue. The lift – similar to a small elevator but much less costly to install on an exterior wall -- will allow anyone to get to the second-floor, which was renovated and used as a performance venue before being shut down by the town manager as a violation of federal ADA guidelines. The Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center see that tradition taking hold in Barrington; they hope to launch it at the Dec. 1 Festival of Lights.
Imagine Barrington sidewalks aglow with luminaries for the holidays. The Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center (BSCC) have that vision. They hope to start that tradition here on Dec. 1. "We'll be selling luminary kits at the Festival of Lights," said Kim Fournier of the BSCC. "We want people to take them home and start lighting them that night." Fournier also wants people to light a single luminary at the festival itself to add some additional glow to the festivities. "We'll have a table with some crayons or markers," she said. "Children can write holiday wishes on the bags or remember a loved one." After the rubber duckies race on Woods Pond on Saturday, Sept. 29, head on over to the annual Harvest Fest in Bay Spring. The Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center are hosting their annual event from 4 to 7 pm.
