Three New Positions in Barrington?

Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. wants to get conversation started on hiring two new police officers -- one in the schools -- and a director of technology.

The town manager wants to get the conversation started on adding several new positions in Barrington. Peter DeAngelis Jr. mentions the positions of Police Resource Officer, Police Accreditation Officer and Director of Technology in the message that accompanies his proposed municipal budget for next year. He describes them as “new positions considered but not included.” That doesn’t mean DeAngelis has rejected the positions. Just the opposite, in fact. “It’s a starting point,” he said. “I introduced them as alternatives that are worthy of additional discussion” as the town tries to expand and improve services.  DeAngelis said the three posts are being considered for the first time because “this is the way business is done today.”  Obviously…

A proposed Barrington budget for the next fiscal year shows a 2 percent tax hike.  Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. released the proposed 2013-14 spending plan on Monday to the Town Council and the Committee on Appropriations. It totals $59.83 million or a 1.68 percent boost in spending over this year. 'Leisure Services' Candidates Sit at Four

Interviews for the new "director of leisure services" in Barrington are finished, but the town manager is not ready to appoint someone yet; 3 of the 4 finalists are from Barrington.

The search goes on for Barrington’s first “director of leisure services.” “I would like to have had someone on board by now,” said Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. on Thursday afternoon. “But vacations and other things got in the way. I’m not ready to appoint someone yet.” DeAngelis and Barrington’s human resources manager, MariAnn Oliveira, have finished interviewing candidates for the person who will replace John Taylor, who retired as recreation director on Aug. 31. There were almost 30 applicants, the 4 finalists got personal interviews, 8 others got phone interviews -- three of the finalists are from Barrington. “Our intent was to draw from a variety of fields,” said DeAngelis, not just the traditional pool of candidates for …

Chemical-Use Signs to Go Up at Fields

Barrington Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. is working with the Conservation Commission to attach signs that explain the treatment of the town's playing fields with synthetic fertilizers.

Expect to see metal signs in a few weeks at all of Barrington’s playing fields that describe the synthetic fertilizers used on them and when the chemicals are applied. The signs will attempt to make parents aware of the chemicals used on the fields by the Department of Public Works. The signs are part of a proposal by the Conservation Commission to begin treating all of the town’s playing fields with organic pesticides and herbicides that has been titled Barrington Environmentally Safe Turf (BEST). “I’m very happy,” said Cynthia Fuller, chair of the Conservation Commission. “It’s a positive thing. I would have liked to see a move to use less chemicals. But as long as people are informed and they are made aware, they can make their own …

So the school gym classes won't be using the fields anymore? When will the schools be sending home "informed consent" forms with full disclosure on the chemicals used? Some parents care enough to opt out of having their children access the chemical-laden lawns. Thank you.   more ›

POLL: Director of Leisure Services?

What do you think of changing Barrington's recreation director into a director of leisure services? The search is on.

Barrington’s town manager is searching for a part-time “director of leisure services” to take the place of the part-time recreation director. (See Patch story.) Several members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the retiring recreation director lashed out last week at the change in title and broader responsibilities for the position. (See Patch story.) They were particularly perturbed because the recreation commission has been proposing that the part-time recreation position be made full time. Meanwhile, Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. has decided to hire a leisure-services chief to create new arts, cultural and other programs for a broader segment of the community while creating stronger partnerships with existing youth sports …

Why not get rid of the position completely and allow the fine folks of Barrington to support their local YMCA and businesses which provide activities for families in town. Since when is the town responsible for recreation or leisure? In case you have not noticed we are in the worst recession since the depression. Stop spending our tax dollars at your whim. Hey, here's an idea, let the YMCA be the…   more ›

Barrington's Last Recreation Director?

The Barrington recreation commission bid goodbye to retiring recreation director John Taylor Thursday night; several members lash out at the search for a 'leisure services' director to replace him.

The Parks and Recreation Commission said goodbye to Barrington’s retiring recreation director, John Taylor, on Thursday evening at the monthly meeting in the library. He retires Aug. 31. Several members of the board later in the meeting then lashed out at the decision made by the town manager to conduct a search for a “leisure-services director” to take over the duties handled by Taylor over the past five years. (See Patch story.) Taylor himself stated his frustration and concern about the impact of this change. “I have a problem with that,” Taylor said of the search for a director of leisure service set in motion by Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. “I still hope for a full-time professional with so much still to do.” In his final written …
