Are Haines Park Fields Worth Cost?

Barrington's parks and recreation board is taking a look at the cost of maintaining the fields under the agreement with the state.

The parks and recreation commission holds its monthly meeting Thursday, April 25, in the Barrington library. It starts at 7:15 pm. Among the agenda items are the cost of maintaining playing fields at Haines Memorial State Park, a tennis-court ordinance resolution, and a review of guidelines for public memorials. The recreation commission endorsed another one-year lease for the Haines Park playing fields at its previous meeting. But members also decided they wanted to review the maintenance costs by the Department of Public Works -- especially with two more playing fields expected to be coming on line at Chianese Park in the near future. Barrington's lease with the RI Department of Environmental Management gives the town exclusive use of …

Board Favors New Haines Park Pact

The Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission votes Thursday night to recommend that the one-year lease with the state for the Haines park playing fields be renewed for another year.

Sign another one-year lease with the state for the Haines Memorial Park playing fields and dog park in Barrington. The Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission will make that recommendation to the Town Council at its April meeting. The current lease expires May 24. The commission voted unanimously Thursday night, March 28, to renew the lease. The cost to the town is for maintenance and upkeep – approximately $33,000 a year. Barrington then has exclusive use of the fields, primarily for Little League Baseball. Before they voted, members of the commission were urged by new member Bob Dillon, who served on that board previously, to consider the cost of the maintenance down the road. Dillon said his preference was to spend that kind of money…

I think Barrington should have bought the Sowams Nursery site and turned it into athletic fields that we would have had complete control of year after year. That would have taken the sting out of the tax bill I paid today. Subsidized housing is a expense that just keeps on giving.   more ›

Does Town Need F-T Rec Director?

The Parks and Recreation Commission votes 2-1 to go before the Barrington Town Council in March and pitch the need for more than a part-time director.

Does Barrington need a full-time recreation director? The Parks and Recreation Commission voted Thursday night to take a step toward turning the current part-time post into a full-time job. But the 2-1 vote with an abstention by an alternate member still leaves the seven-member board’s support for a full-time recreation director in doubt. Indeed, chairman Michael Seward, who voted against a motion to go before the Town Council in March and push for more hours for the position, said he’s simply not sure Barrington needs a full-time director.  “I don’t think we have a case,” he said. “I think we’re at a draw right now.” Vice chairman Edwin McKinlay, who seconded the motion, and commission member Anthony Arico, who made the motion, disagree. …

One thing that Barrington is extremely good at is spending money. Is it any wonder that our taxes are sky high. Wait for the next round of raises for teachers and you'll need a cocktail when seeing your next tax bill. The Barrington motto: When in Doubt, Spend".   more ›

F-T Recreation Chief Returns to Table

The Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission is expected to present its model for a full-time director at tonight's meeting in the library.

A proposal for a full-time recreation director in Barrington returns to the agenda for tonight's meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission. Members of the board also will be brought up to speed on projects in Barrington that have a parks and recreation orientation by Town Planner Phil Hervey. The meeting starts at 7 pm in the Barrington library meeting room on the second floor. The recreation director proposal is expected to be the same one to be presented to the Barrington Town Council, said President June Speakman, the liaison to the parks and recreation board. She suggested more than a year ago, when discussion started on this issue, that the board come up with a model and a concept for a full-time director. In the meantime, Town …
