Going Bald to Fight Childhood Cancer

Barrington firefighters have their heads shaved to raise money for the Saint Baldrick's organization.

Eight members of Barrington Firefighters Local 1774 gave up their hair last Thursday night to help fight childhood cancer.  The firefighters joined other firefighters from cities and towns throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts in the annual Saint Baldrick's fundraising event, which helps to raise money for research into childhood cancer. Local Families Get Turkey Dinners

Barrington Firefighters Local 1774 handed out turkey baskets to 30 needy families last weekend.

Thirty local families will enjoy a complete Thanksgiving meal with the help of Barrington firefighters again this year. Firefighters Local 1774 donated Thanksgiving baskets to families in need for the fifth consecutive year, according to firefighter David Paull. Most of the baskets went to Barrington residents; a few went to Riverside and Warren homes. “The turkey baskets included stuffing, potatoes donated by retired Barrington firefighter Bob Lavin, gravy, green beans, corn, yams, cranberry sauce, and a gift card to Shaws,” said Paul. “This year was better than the past few years with requests down from 50 baskets three years in a row to 30 this year,” he said. “We sure hope it is a sign of better economic times."
