Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette said reports of near-drought conditions seem misplaced given the recent wet weather, but brush fires are always an issue.
Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette said he is not too concerned about reports of so-called near-drought conditions in Rhode Island, which could spark brush fires like the one almost two weeks on the Swansea-Barrington line. “It’s not a particular concern,” said Bessette. “I think we’re only a couple of inches short of normal rainfall now.” "You can always have a brush fire," Bessette said, drought or not. But rains that have soaked the area over the past week or so definitely lower the risk. Bessette said he did read of some lingering concern about a drought by the executive director of the Bristol County Water Authority, Pamela Marchand, who also serves on the Water Resources Board. Barrington, Swansea and Warren firefighters get under control a one-acre brush fire in the vicinty of Sowams Road and Barneyville Road early Friday evening.
Firefighters from Barrington, Swansea and Warren battled a brush fire late Friday afternoon in the vicinity of Sowams Road in Barrington and Barneyville Road in Swansea, according to Barrington dispatchers. The fire was reported around 4:30 pm. Flames could be seen from Sowams Road and smoke could be seen as far away as Route 195 in Massachusetts. Details were sketchy but the brush fire reportedly started in Swansea near Deep Meadow Road and jumped the state line, according to the Providence Journal news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2012/04/barrington-fire-1.html. Seven Barrington firefighters had their heads shaved for the St. Baldrick's Foundation Wednesday evening.
Seven Barrington firefighters have a lot less hair to comb today. The firefighters had their heads shaved on Wednesday night for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity which raises money to fund research to find cures for childhood cancers. The St. Baldrick's event was held at McFadden's Restaurant in Providence. The Barrington Fire Department has been involved for several years under the leadership of firefighter Matt Kane. "He's the team leader," said Pat Dyer, who shed his locks on Wednesday evening. St. Baldricks funds the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers, according to its website.
