Business Association Wants You

The Barrington Business Association is kicking off a membership drive.

The Barrington Business Association wants you if you run a business in Barrington. The BBA decided at its Tuesday night meeting at the Tyler Point Grille to kick off a membership drive. For annual dues of $75 a year, said Lois Coppolino, co-director of the association, you can reap the following benefits: For instance, the BBA is planning “artisan nights” at local stores for next September and October. Local artists will display their artwork once or twice a month in a store or shop in an effort to gain exposure and attract more customers to the stores. Another example of a joint activity, said Coppolino, is a one-day Octoberfest being planned for Oct. 13. It will include a farmers’ market, hay rides and a haunted house created in the …

Merchants Put Stores on Map

The Barrington Business Association prints a full-color, fold-up map that shows the locations of more than two dozen local stores and shops.

Barrington merchants have put themselves on a map. The free pocket-size, full-color map was put together by the Barrington Business Association (BBA). It shows the exact locations of 26 stores and shops and includes ads by 10 merchants. It arrived this week, said Lois Coppolino, owner of Daisy Dig'ins and a co-director of the BBA. “Because we don’t have a Main Street, we need the map,” she said. “It should be very worthwhile." The map also provides a profile of the town, places to visit, and a list of 2012 events in town, such as the upcoming Memorial Day parade, the CVS Caremark Charity Classic in June, the summer concert schedule, Barrington Beach Day in August, the business association’s Fall Festival, and the annual Festival of Lights …

'Artisans Night', Festival Fleshed Out

The Barrington Business Association plans two events: a showcase for artists over the course of the summer and a festival in October.

The Barrington Business Association put some meat on the bones of two events coming up down the road at its monthly meeting Tuesday night, May 8. Beginning on the last Thursday in July, the merchants’ group will launch an “Artisans Night” to showcase local artists and their works. Artists will be invited to set up shop in Barrington stores from 7 to 9 pm in an attempt to attract customers for their works and the host stores. “Artisans Night” will then continue through October on the last Thursday in each month until the fall. Final details will be worked out over the next few weeks. A date for a “Fall Festival” was finalized. It will be held on Oct. 13. The festival will center around Barrington’s town hall, library and senior center with …

Are Sign Laws Merchant-Unfriendly?

There has been little negative reaction to Barrington's sign ordinances since the issue was raised at the April meeting of the business association.

Do merchants think it is time to revisit Barrington’s sign ordinances or not? The town’s sign ordinances, often viewed as less than friendly to merchants, became an issue at the April meeting of the Barrington Business Association. But since then the complaints levied at that meeting seem to have fallen by the wayside. Holly Smith of Hollies on the Avenue, co-president of the business association, said at the May meeting of the association Tuesday night, that an email she distributed to members of the association brought no responses. Smith said in her email: “We will meet with the Town of Barrington sometime in June. We would like to bring with us ideas, recommendations, and ‘war’ stories of getting proper signage in town. If you cannot …

The reason Ciao Bella and DK Fabrics waited so long for a new sign had nothing to do with the town. They waited for the ground to thaw.   more ›

Business Group: Revisit Sign Laws

The Barrington Business Association to ask the Town Council to revisit the sign ordinances and make them more merchant-friendly.

The Barrington Business Association believes it might be time to revisit the town’s sign ordinances -- often seen as less than friendly to merchants. The often-maligned sign ordinances in Barrington came up as an issue at Tuesday night’s monthly meeting at RE/MAX River's Edge. Town Councilor Bill DeWitt asked to be put on the agenda. “Is it time to revisit signage?” he asked. DeWitt said he was walking with his daughter at the Kent Street shopping plaza when the lack of signs came to mind. He said the current laws sometimes create “unintended consequences." Putting up a sign in Barrington “is one of the most unpleasant aspects of opening a business here,” said Bill Dessel, owner of Billy’s Restaurant in the Maple Avenue shopping plaza. “We…

There needs to be a more stream -lined business friendly sign application/approval process. It takes too long and review of two boards (Technical Review Committee and Planning) is not necessary when we have a full time Planner on the the town's payroll. There are already guidlines in place....a restrictive sign ordinance just make the process easier.....   more ›

Councilors Support Visitors' Pamphlet

The Town Council grants $2,000 to the production of a pamphlet promoting Barrington by the business association.

The Barrington Business Association got some financial help Monday night with the planned production of a new full-color pamphlet promoting the town to prospective visitors. The Town Council voted unanimously to provide $2,000 for the project at its monthly meeting. “I think the concept is great,” said Town Council Vice President Jeff Brenner. “I would support this request,” said Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. Holly Smith of Hollies on the Avenue, a co-president of the business association, actually asked for $5,000 for the printing of 12,000 copies. The councilors chose instead to trim the group’s request. But if there is a shortfall, Smith was told to come back to the Town Council and make another request. Smith said the pamphlet will …
