A cast of 40 Barrington Middle School students will perform this weekend in four shows of Arts Alive!'s production of 'Once Upon a Mattress'.
Arts Alive! presents four performances of "Once Upon a Mattress" -- its first-ever Barrington Middle School production -- this weekend. The Rogers & Hammerstein production debuts tonight at 7 and then continues Saturday at 1 and 7 pm and Sunday, March 10 at 1 pm. More than 40 sixth- through eighth-grade students make up the cast described by director Dena Davis as very talented. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The 'Late Winter Festival' merged performers and performing arts groups for an afternoon of entertainment Sunday in the Barrington library auditorium.
The "Late Winter Festival" brought a rather unique celebration of Barrington's performing arts community to the library auditorium Sunday afternoon. Professional singers Pat McGee and Pat McAloon and the Local Brew Coffeehouse quintet, Bay Spring Folk, performed in two shows along with children performers from both of the town's youth performing arts groups, the Barrington Community Theater and Arts Alive! A 1:30 pm show packed the 105-seat auditorium; a 3:30 pm show filled most of the seats. The shows were free.

Primrose Hill School pupils present this adaptation of the Kipling novel and the Disney movie next weekend, Jan. 25-26.
Primrose Hill School will open the 2013 season of Arts Alive in Barrington with three performances of Disney’s "The Jungle Book" on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26. Over 60 first- to third-grade pupils are ready to hit the stage. All shows take place at the Barrington Middle School auditorium, 261 Middle Highway. 'Elephant Troop' for Primrose Hill School performance of 'Jungle Book' gets whipped into shape by Air Force Cadet Nick Felag of Barrington.
Nick Felag of Barrington spent part of his Thanksgiving break teaching third-graders at Primrose Hill School how to march, salute and stand at attention. Felag is a third-class cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He helped Arts Alive! founder and director Dena Davis whip into shape the kids who are making up Col. Hathi's “Elephant Troop” for the January performance of “Jungle Book.” “Pick a spot on the wall and stare at it,” Felag told the kids about standing at attention. “Don’t look at anything else.” Felag’s sister, Elizabeth, is an intern with Arts Alive! this semester. Pupils at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington write, perform scripts on making 'positive choices' under the collaboration of The BAY Team and Arts Alive!
“If you give a little love, it will all come back to you. You know you’re going to be remembered for the things that you say and do.” Those lyrics were sung by the chorus in the finale of “Bugsy Malone,” an Arts Alive!-produced play performed a couple of weeks ago by students at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington. Many students at the school then took the challenge of writing their own two-minute scripts about spreading love with ideas suggested by The BAY Team, Barrington’s substance-abuse prevention coalition. The ideas swirled around “making healthy decision and positive choices,” said Kathy Sullivan, program manager. The Arts Alive! performance of'Bugsy Malone Jr.' that debuts next weekend is the eighth show in three years in Barrington for this one-of-a-kind theater company.
About three years ago, the idea of producing children’s theater performances in Barrington was just taking shape in the minds of Dena Davis and Kim Durkin. Next weekend, Davis and Durkin will see “Bugsy Malone Jr.” debut on the high school stage as the eighth performance produced by Arts Alive! of Barrington – the nonprofit theater company they formed for children in the elementary schools. The Arts Alive! production, 'Alice/Alex in Wonderland', features a cast of pupils at Primrose Hill School.
“Alice/Alex in Wonderland” opens tonight, Jan. 20, and continues Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, at the Barrington Middle School. This adaptation of the classic “Alice in Wonderland” tale is the first production of the 2011-2012 school year by Arts Alive!, the nonprofit Barrington theater program for elementary school children.
