The win by the Broncos ties the series at a game apiece and sets up a winner-take-all game three Sunday afternoon at Brown University for the Division I state hockey crown. Tipoff is 2 pm at Meehan Auditorium. Burrillville led after the first period, 1-0, and then scored two more goals in the second period to go up 3-0. Eagles Take First Game in Title Series

The Barrington High boys' ice hockey team blanks Burrillville, 1-0, in the opening game of the three-game series; game two is Saturday afternoon at Brown University.

One game down and one to go. The Barrington High School boys' ice hockey team took game one of the Division I state hockey championship best-of-three series with a 1-0 over Burrillville Thursday night, March 14. Barrington played tough team defense in shutting out Burrillville behind senior goalie and captain Andrew Galbraith, who made 28 saves. Freshman Michael Lombardi scored the game's only goal 3:53 into the third period with a feed from Steven Miller. Burrillville's goalie, Kyle Wilkinson, played almost as well in the defeat, making 30 saves. The Eagles survived the last two minutes of the game when they were down two players in the penalty box and Burrillville pulled its goalie for a 6 on 3 attack.  Galbraith and the defense, led by …

Rams, Dunphy Ground Eagles for Title

Barrington is limited to seven second half points, as La Salle controls from end to end in a 62-29 win for the state title.

The La Salle Rams steamrolled Barrington, 62-29, for the girls’ basketball state title Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island Kingston’s campus. La Salle led by 10 points throughout most of the first half, increasing the margin to 35-22 at halftime. A stifling defense and Barrington’s frustration with foul calls against them led to just seven points for the Eagles in the second half. While the Rams did seem to get the benefit of more calls, La Salle also played a more skilled and aggressive game. The Rams finished when given opportunities down low, and their press harassed the Eagles into turnovers throughout both halves. Also, unfortunately for the Eagles, the best player from Barrington on Sunday was …

Barrington Girls Shoot for Hoops Crown

Tip-off is at 4 p.m. at the Ryan Center, on the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus. We will be hosting a live chat for the game. While the Rams (20-4, 17-1 Division I-North) are the tournament’s top seed, their lone loss this year was to Barrington (22-2, 16-2 Division I-Central). On Jan. 16, the Eagles beat La Salle 51-41 at Barrington High School in the lone regular season game between the two. The rest of the year, La Salle outscored its Division I opponents by 385 points – an average of 21 points per game. After a bye in the preliminary round, the Rams beat …

Song Remains The Same – Rams Fade in Second Half

The Rams’ first half efficiency gets wore down by a more talented UMass squad, as URI loses 75-66 in its season finale.

KINGSTON – For seemingly the 100th time this year, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team saw a close game slip away in the second half, as the Rams couldn’t keep pace with a more talented opponent. For Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, the cast of characters changed, as the University of Massachusetts Minutemen played the role of past squads like La Salle, St. Bonaventure and VCU. However, the ending was the same, as the Rams lost 75-66. As usual, the Rams were within striking distance at the half, trailing by just a single point with about four seconds left. In a play that epitomized URI’s season, UMass point guard Chaz Williams got the ball in the backcourt, shook off light contact from 60 feet away, and then launched a …

[CHAT] URI Closes Out Season vs. UMass

The Rams look to end the season on a positive note with a win against the University of Massachusetts.

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team looks to recover from a brutal loss to St. Joseph’s with a season-ending win against the University of Massachusetts today. Tip-off at the Ryan Center is at 2 p.m., and as usual, we will be providing a live chat for the game. The Rams (8-20, 3-12 Atlantic 10) last played on Wednesday, when they were crushed 81-44 at St. Joseph’s (17-11, 8-7 Atlantic 10). The lone bright spot was that the game was only 40 minutes long. URI looks to bounce back in their season and home finale, against UMass (18-10, 8-7 Atlantic 10). The Rams have already been eliminated from postseason play, as their record doesn’t qualify them for Atlantic 10, NIT or NCAA tournament play. There are two special things …

The Barrington-Mt. Hope-Portsmouth Co-op team beat Lincoln-Cumberland Co-op two straight in the finals.

Hope-Portsmouth Co-op team won its second straight title Thursday night at Brown University – the first one last year was with Barrington-Portsmouth Co-op. The squad beat the Lincoln-Cumberland Co-op team, 5-2, to sweep the three-game final in two straight, according to eastbayri.com. Kelly Kraunelis, a sophomore at Barrington High School, was selected as the MVP after scoring three goals and assisting on two others in the two games. “It feels amazing [to win again]; I think it feels even better than last year,” said head coach Deneen Stebenne. “These girls worked so hard this year; I’m so proud of them.” See the complete story and more photos at …

Rowing Club's Contract Renewed

East Bay Rowing of Barrington operates programs for teens and adults out of the Walker Farm conservation area on Hundred Acre Cove.

Several dozen supporters of the East Bay Rowing club turned out at the Barrington Town Council meeting Monday night to push for a renewal of the contract with the nonprofit rowing club.  They didn’t go home disappointed.  The Town Council voted 4-1 to renew the contract with the club, which is operated by Barrington residents Deb and Patrick Sullivan out of the Walker Farm conservation area off of County Road. The length of the pact is two years. “They brought tears to my eyes,” said Deb Sullivan of the support shown for the organization at the council meeting. The club conducted classes for about 105 teens and adults last year through the contract with the Recreation Department, she said. It launches its 4-person and 8-person racing …

Girls' Basketball Team in Title Game

Barrington High School's girls' basketball team beat Exeter/West Greenwich, 42-41, Tuesday night in a semifinal game at RIC.

Sophomore point guard Sarah Middleton scored almost half of her Barrington High basketball team’s points Tuesday night in the girls’ Division I semifinal victory over Exeter/West Greenwich. The score was 42-41. Middletown had 20 points. The playoff win avenged one of the Eagles’ two losses in a 20-2 regular season. The Eagles now will nowon to the title game Sunday at 4 pm in the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island. They will play La Salle Academy, which beat Westerly, 47-37, in the second game of a semifinal doubleheader Tuesday night at Rhode Island College.  Barrington survived a second-half comeback by E/WG to pull out the win, according to the Providence Journal. E/WG trailed 34-17 at the break but clawed back into the game …
