Barrington High School's girls' lacrosse team wins the RI Interscholastic League state title to cap an undefeated season.
Barrington High School’s girls’ lacrosse team finished an undefeated season by winning the R.I. Interscholastic League Division I championship on Saturday at Brown University. “Player of the Game” Mary Kate Coogan scored three goals and assisted on three other scores as Barrington defeated La Salle, 14-10, in the Division I final, according to the Providence Journal. Kelly Dolan also scored three goals for the Eagles. Beatrice Bramhall, Madeline Soutter, and Annie Sullivan each scored two goals for the Eagles, who were led by first-year coach Kathryn Tajima. The championship is the Eagles' 10th state title but their first in four years. They lost in the finals the previous two years. The girls have played in the title game for 13 …

Barrington Pop Warner holds an "open house" Thursday from 7 to 9 pm in the Barrington Senior Center in the lower level of the library. You can meet the coaches, directors, and parents of current players; learn how to register your child, check out the gear and “get the story on Pop Warner football and cheer in Barrington,” said Chip Miller, president of the youth sports organization. The open house can be especially valuable for parents and players who have not played in the past and are looking for information, said Miller. Are you a trivia buff? Then head on over to the Democratic Club at 186 Roffee St. in Barrington tonight at 6:30. It’s "Trivia Night" for the East Bay Rowing Club. You can test your trivia knowledge and help the club purchase a coxswain’s box for the new season. What? You don’t know what a coxswain’s box is. According to Wikipedia, a coxswain’s box, also known as a “cox box," is an electronic device used in competitive rowing that combines a digital stroke rate monitor and elapsed time readout with a voice amplifier.” A coxswain is the person who sits in the stern of a four-person or eight-person boat, steers it, manages the race and the performance of the crew. A Senate Committee has approved a bill that will allow school districts to have father-daughter dances and other gender-exclusive events as long as a comparable event for the opposite gender is offered. The bill now heads to the Senate floor. The bill, 2013-S 0012, was submitted by Cranston Sen. Hannah Gallo with several co-sponsors, including East Providence Sen. Daniel Da Ponte. It would alter state gender-discrimination laws, which Cranston school lawyers have said traditional father-daughter dances violate. A complaint from the mother of a Cranston girl triggered the review. The Barrington Youth Basketball League racks up three championships this season.
The Barrington Youth Basketball League won three championships this past season -- not two -- as previously reported. The fourth-grade team also won the Metro West D3 South regular season championship, according to Todd Rywolt, a coach and official with the BYBL. The fifth-grade and eighth-grade teams also won titles in the travel league. The fourth-grade boys team started off the season by winning its first eleven games, enabling the squad to capture the Metro West South Division 3 regular season championship, said Rywolt. The team finished 11-1, which was the second best record of all of the 28 teams that competed at the Division 3 level. Bobby Hurley, one of the most iconic figures in college basketball history, has been named the 12th men's basketball head coach at the University at Buffalo. He joins UB from the University of Rhode Island where he has been serving as associate head coach. UB Director of Athletics Danny White made the announcement on Tuesday at a 5:00 pm press conference at Alumni Arena.
