Barrington Land Conservation Trust

The Barrington Land Conservation Trust is a private, nonprofit organization that works to preserve the town's remainingMore natural resources and adjacent areas, such as streams, ponds, marshlands, woodlands and other scenic and natural sites.  It preserves the land through acquisitions, either by donation or easement; advocacy, and educational programs, such as family walks on trails in larger sites.  More than 250 acres of land on 69 properties have been preserved for passive and active recreational use by Barrington's residents. A governing board meets in public five times a year at the Barrington library. There is an annual public meeting each June in the same location. The Land Trust works closely with town officials and the Barrington Conservation Commission.

The Town of Barrington Recreation department offers a variety of activities and events, including a summer camp forMore children ages four to 12, tennis and golf tournaments, tennis lessons, an annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony, a Barrington Beach Day and a breakfast with grandparents at the Barrington Senior Center. It also schedules the use of baseball and soccer fields for local youth sports leagues.

John Taylor is Barrington's recreation director. The town resident was named to the position in 2007 after a long career as a coach and intramurals director at Rhode Island College.  He works closely with the Parks and Recreation Commission, an eight-member volunteer board. The recreation office is located in the lower level of the library and community center.

Barrington Yacht Club

The Barrington Yacht Club recently celebrated its hundredth anniversary. It is located near the confluence of theMore Barrington and Palmer Rivers. Its members have excellent access to beautiful Narragansett Bay. The club offers many amenities to its members including a dining area, full bar, swimming pool, moorings and slips. Activities range from club events to local, regional, national and international regattas. The training committee offers training in sailing to the club's junior members. This is a members' only club.

This church is nestled on the tree-shrouded corner of Washington Road and Bradford Street in West Barrington. The churchMore congregation strives to "nurture each person's faith journey through joyful worship, supportive fellowship, and active outreach ministries." These outreach ministries include Mobile Loaves and Fishes, which provides food and clothing to the homeless from a pickup truck that parks in the church lot. Youth, young adult and women's spirituality groups provide other outreach opportunities. Pastor Nancy N. Behr also serves the Methodist church in nearby Warren, and keeps Barrington office hours on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Town of Barrington Senior Services

Barrington's Senior Center is one of about 15 accredited sites in Rhode Island. Director Louise House came to theMore position in 2010 after a long career with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Membership is free, as are most programs. Among the services offered to residents 55 and older are social and recreational activities such as scrabble, bridge, bingo, seminars, day trips, a weekday lunch, parties, and overnight excursions. Personal enrichment activities include painting, chorus, computer and safe driver classes. Wellness activities include exercise, tai chi, yoga, line dancing, chair massage, blood pressure checks, a flu clinic, and glaucoma screening. Seniors can get help with health insurance, prescription plans, and emergency dialer system installations. A seven-member Senior Center Advisory Board oversees operations. Friends of the Barrington Senior Center raises funds through a yearly campaign. A computer lab, the senior van and the fitness room are among their gifts. The Senior Center is located on the south side of the library and community center building.
