Raging Mad; Alibi Needs Alibi

Take a look at some of the more compelling police reports from around the state. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Hulk Smash? Getting arrested is an incredibly angering experience for some. For one New Jersey man, the rage that followed his arrest could be described as…Hulk-ish?  Smithfield police arrested a 21-year-old man on DUI charges after he had allegedly crashed his car into a tree. At the police station, the man took a Breathalyzer test, then allegedly stood up from his chair, walked over to the sink and tore it from the wall, breaking the pipes attaching it. Police were able to subdue the man/Hulk impersonator with a Taser. When Your Alibi Needs an Alibi This week’s best fake alibi goes to a Providence man accused of robbery. When police caught up to the man who allegedly stole $341 from Kattan’s Market in Cranston, he told them he couldn’t …

Should DUI Limit Be Lowered to 1 Drink?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit to .05 to save lives. Is that reasonable?

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent -- the law in RI -- to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. There were 24 DUI fatalities in Rhode Island in 2012, which were 34 percent of traffic-related fatalities last year, …

Guess What They Ran Into Last Week?

The new owner of a Barrington home finds an unusual weapon in his attic and a woman gets snagged while jogging.

You'll never guess what they ran into last week. On Thursday afternoon, Barrington police were informed by a the new owner of a house on Winsor Road that he found a baseball bat with nails and spikes hammered into it to make quite a weapon or an accessory to a Halloween costume.  The bat was found stuffed inside some insulation in a wall in the attic, where some electrical work is being done, according to the police report.  Then early on Friday morning about 6:24, a woman runner crossing the north side of the Barrington Bridge got snagged around the neck by a fishing line running from the guard rail into the water. She was not injured, just surprised.  A man fishing from the Barrington Bridge left the line dangling across the walkway. He …

Stolen Van Recovered in Haines Park

The van was apparently ditched on a small trail in heavy brush in the Barrington park after being stolen from Providence early Friday morning.

Barrington police recovered a Ford van reported stolen from Providence in Haines Memorial Park early last Friday morning.  The van was spotted about 6 am backed into heavy brush on a small trail in the park behind the baseball field and dog park. It was described as having heavy damage on the underside with anti-freeze leaking from the radiator, said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross. The van also is believed to have hit a port-o-john near the nearby parking lot, which showed “doughnuts” made by a vehicle, LaCross said. Fresh tracks and tire marks led to the van ditched in the brush, he said.  The owner of the van is a man from Connecticut who was on his way to Martha’s Vineyard for the weekend. He apparently left it parked outside a …

Have You Spotted 'Person of Interest'?

Another mid-day burglary of a home on County Road in Barrington appears similar to the burglary of a Wood Avenue home that produced a "person of interest" spotted at the Dunkin' Donuts.

Police continue to look for a “person of interest” in the mid-day burglary of a Wood Avenue home in Barrington on March 22. Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said Monday morning that he is a “person of interest” in another mid-day burglary that occurred last Monday, May 6, at a County Road home.  The owner of the County Road home reported the burglary to police at around 4:30 pm. He had left the house around 11 am and returned about 20 minutes before reporting the illegal entry, according to the police report. LaCross said the Wood Avenue burglar is believed to have entered that home in the same way he entered the County Road home – through a rear window after pushing in a screen. And as the burglar did on Wood Avenue, he focused …
