Rainfall Dampens Fire Chief's Concerns

Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette said reports of near-drought conditions seem misplaced given the recent wet weather, but brush fires are always an issue.

Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette said he is not too concerned about reports of so-called near-drought conditions in Rhode Island, which could spark brush fires like the one almost two weeks on the Swansea-Barrington line. “It’s not a particular concern,” said Bessette. “I think we’re only a couple of inches short of normal rainfall now.” "You can always have a brush fire," Bessette said, drought or not. But rains that have soaked the area over the past week or so definitely lower the risk. Bessette said he did read of some lingering concern about a drought by the executive director of the Bristol County Water Authority, Pamela Marchand, who also serves on the Water Resources Board. See story in the Barrington Times. Marchand did say …

Barrington Not Top Spot For DUI Arrests

Statistics from RI Attorney General's Office show that in 2010 Barrington was far behind the top places in the state for DUI arrests.

The Barrington Police Department got some statewide recognition recently when two patrol officers arrested state Sen. Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio for drunk driving. But that arrest does not make Barrington a leader among police departments in Rhode Island for DUI arrests. Just the opposite, actually, according to a WPRO News story on the top places in the state for drunk driving arrests in 2010.  Statistics from the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office show that there were only 27 DUI arrests in Barrington in 2010 – far less than the top 5 places: the RI State Police, which made 449 arrests; Warwick with 328; Woonsocket with 167; Coventry with 159 arrests and Cranston with 148 DUI arrests. A large bone that was found washed up on the shore at Nayatt Point Court in Barrington last Saturday afternoon, May 5, has been sent for analysis to determine if it is human. Police officers retrieved the bone about 1 pm on Saturday after being contacted by a caller walking along the shoreline near the Nayatt Point lighthouse. The caller reported the bone to appear human, LaCross said. But the origin of the bone won’t be known until the results come back from the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s office in Providence.
