Monday Essentials: Take Geek Photo, Enjoy Holiday Concerts

Start planning your week ahead with some help from Patch.

Here are some things to know about this week, Dec. 9-15, in and around Barrington: 

Barrington Neighbors & Newcomers starts new doubles’ and beginners’ tennis groups today, Dec. 9, at 9 am at Centre Court tennis club, 55 Hospital Road, Riverside, for anyone who wants to have fun playing tennis with friends and neighbors. The event is free to anyone who wants to play and learn tennis. You do not need to be a BNN member to play with thi group.  

Whatever you geek, come share it with friends and family at the Barrington library on Tuesday, Dec. 10, by having your photo taken at the library’s What Do You Geek Photo Booth between 3:30 and 6:30 pm. The photo will be modeled after the “I Geek” posters and flyers that have been posted in the library this fall.

The Music Program of Barrington Presbyterian Church presents on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3 pm “Cantante de Adventum,” a choral and instrumental concert of Christmas music composed for choir, vocal soloists, and instrumentalists. This hour-long concert will feature old favorites and some lesser-known works of many styles and genres. Admission is free but a free-will offering will be collected. 

Learn to wrap, tie bows, and create embellishments and style at a free Holiday Gift Wrapping workshop with local artist Suzanne Volmer on Thursday, December 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the Barrington library. Linden Place Mansion in Bristol offers “The Clancy Legacy Celtic Christmas” concert on Friday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 pm – a fireside concert in the ballroom honoring both the holidays and winter solstice. The Clancy Legacy includes some of the next generation of performers descended from the Clancy Brothers of Ed Sullivan fame in the 196’s. Aoife Clancy is on vocals and bodhran, Robbie O’Connell plays the guitar and signs and George Keith plays the fiddle and concertina. Tickets are $20 general admission, $16 for Linden Place members and $12 for Colt Circle members. Call to reserve tickets at 401-253-0390. 

The Baptist Church in Warren holds its annual “Christmas Cookie Walk” on Saturday, Dec. 14, starting at 9 am until all the cookies are gone. A wide variety of home-made and hand-decorated frosted, filled, sugar, and gingerbread cookies will be sold at $8 per pound. Come early for the best selection.
