Monday Essentials: Library Shows Eco, Scary Movies, Offers Jazz Program

Start planning your week with some help from Barrington Patch.

Here are some things to know about this week, Oct. 7-13, in and around Barrington:

The four-week, Barrington Conservation Commission-sponsored film series, “Earth Matters,” concludes today in the Barrington library auditorium at 7 pm with The End of the Line, an unrated 2009 film that shows first-hand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food, examining the imminent extinction of numerous species, and the profound implications of a future world without fish.

Join librarian and film enthusiast Doug Swiszcz at 1 pm for the second matinee movie of his fall 2013 series, “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” designed to send shivers down your spine. This week’s film is The Innocents, starring Deborah Kerr as a governess who fears that her young charges are possessed by the spirits of a former governess and her sadistic lover. Based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. For more information on the series, please visit Doug’s film blog.

Also on Wednesday, come and hear Lloyd Kaplan, teacher and jazz musician, talk about the history of jazz in America at 7 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 9 – the second of a free three-part series featuring live music by The Aristocats and the Barrington High School Jazz Ensemble. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Barrington Public Library.

Have a guten tag (good day) at Atria Bay Spring Village, 147 Bay Spring Ave., on Friday, Oct. 11. The assisted living facility is bringing Munich to Barrington in celebration of Oktoberfest starting at 3:30 pm. You can enjoy a selection of seasonal beers and Bavarian fare with music by accordionist Marcus Ferrelli. You might even want to don your lederhosen (leather breeches).  Contact Justin Payne at 401-246-2500 if you plan on celebrating with them.

St. Luke’s School, 10 Waldron Ave., hosts its annual Fall Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 7:30 am to 1 pm. Feast on pancakes, sausage, muffins, coffee and juice to help support the 2014 St. Luke's Jamaica Missionaries. A donation of any size will help defray the cost of their Mission Trip in February. Consider helping fill St. Angela's Food Pantry at the same time by donating a non-perishable food item.
