Monday Essentials: Book Signings, Road Race, Ballet for Holiday Week

Start planning your Thanksgiving week with some help from Patch.

Here are some things to know about during Thanksgiving week, Nov. 25 – Dec. 1, in and around Barrington:

Barrington Books, 184 County Road, hosts a discussion and signing of the book, “The People’s Martyr,” by Erik Chaput, a professor at Providence College and the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 6:30 to 8 pm. It offers just about anything you may want to know about one of Rhode Island’s most famous citizens, Thomas Dorr, and the rebellion that took his name about 20 years before the Civil War.

In honor of National Novel Writing Month, the Barrington library brings a children’s book author to speak about tips and tricks to writing and publishing your book. Peter Mandel of Providence, the author of 11 books for kids, stops by on Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 6:30 to 8 pm to discuss knowing when you need an agent, connecting with artists, self-publishing and other insiders' tips for marketing your first book and getting it into the hands of exactly the right gatekeepers in the publishing world.

Barrington High's Eagles and Mt. Hope High's Huskies tangle in their annual Thanksgiving Day football game at Victory Field in Barrington. Kickoff is at 10 am.

Trot Off Your Turkey at the 14th annual 5K road race and 1.5 mile walk on Saturday, Nov. 30, at St. Luke’s School in Barrington. The annual post-Thanksgiving fundraisers for the school and the RI Community Food Bank for TAP-IN in Barrington start at 10 am on Washington Road at St. Luke’s Church. Registration online and in person continues right up to the start of the races.

John Passante of Barrington, a business executive and author, presents his book, "The Human Side, High-Touch Leadership in a High-Tech World” at  Barrington Books, 184 County Road, on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1 pm. Passante is president and CEO of Brenton Productions and the Organizational Development Group, Inc. His book challenges readers to look at the human side of leadership in the information age, where technology can sometimes isolate employees from personal contact with their leaders. 

Ballet Prestige of Barrington presents its second performance of the classic ballet, “The Nutcracker,” on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 3 pm at St. Andrew’s School, 63 Federal Road, in Barrington. You can purchase tickets online or at the door of the McCulloch Center for the Arts.
