RWU Students Spread Out, Clean Up

Dozens of Roger Williams University students complete community services projects in Barrington.

Dozens of Roger Williams University students spread out across Barrington Monday, Aug. 27, to clean up and do yard work and some landscaping at three locations.

The effort was part of Community Connections 2012, which sent out 1,100 new RWU students out across the state to do community service projects. The students must participate as a graduation requirement.

Faythe Herdrich, a 30-year member of Barrington United Methodist Church on Washington Road, said the university contacted the church.

“We jumped at the chance,” said Herdrich, who coordinated the landscaping and cleanup effort at the church. “Especially because we’re part of the Destination Drownville tour of the preservation society.”

Students trimmed bushes, pulled weeds, and cleaned up the grounds around the church.

“They were very enthusiastic,” said Herdrich.

Beyond the direct impact of the projects, said Brian Clarke, director of public affairs at RWU, “the intent is to introduce RWU students to community engagement with individuals and organizations in what will be their hometown for the next four years.”

The students also did some gardening and cleanup at the Barrington Senior Center and the Bayside YMCA.
