Pressel, Haas 'Scramble' to CVS Title

Morgan Pressel and Jay Haas broke a three-way tie for first at Rhode Island Country Club to win the 14th CVS Caremark Charity Classic Tuesday afternoon.

The “scramble” format – players play the best ball -- suits Morgan Pressel and Jay Haas just fine.

The team shot a 59 over the final 18 holes of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic on Tuesday to take the 14th title of the tournament held each year at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington.

They were presented with a glass trophy on the 18th green by co-hosts Brad Faxon of Barrington and Billy Andrade of Bristol. CVS CEO Larry Merlo thanked everyone for coming and invited everyone back to RICC next year for the 15th CVS classic.

Wind off Narragansett Bay whipped the course, especially the four finishing holes, throughout the day, and made it a much more difficult venue for golf. Clouds kept the sunshine to a minimum although there never seemed to be a threat of a shower.

Pressel and Haas took the lead over the front 9 holes with six birdies and two eagles. They were never really threatened the rest of the round after carding two more eagles on holes 10 and 12 to finish 21 under par – 12 under par in the final round.

Thompson and Pavin did manage to cut the lead to 2 shots by carding five birdies over the final seven holes to finish at 19 under par. Pressel and Haas got one birdie and five pars over their final six holes. Meanwhile, Pettersen and Funk birdied six of their final seven holes to get to within 2 shots at the end.

The size of the crowd definitely was down this year without any big-name PGA players in the field, which was made up of LPGA and Champions tour players. The U.S. Open outside of San Francisco drew all the names, although Peter Jacobsen, who did TV commentary for the Open, did fly to Rhode Island to play in the CVS tourney after the Open ended.

Here are the final standings, according to WPRI Channel 12, the media partner for the CVS Classic:

  • Morgan Pressel / Jay Haas -21
  • Alexis Thompson / Corey Pavin -19
  • Suzann Pettersen / Fred Funk -19
  • Brittany Lincicome / Brett Quigley -17

  • Lorena Ochoa / Mark Calcavecchia -16
  • Yani Tseng / Jeff Sluman -16
  • Cristie Kerr / John Cook -15
