Firefighters Hosting 5K Road Race

Barrington Local 1774 to hold road race and Family Fun Day on June 3 to benefit Heartworks and other local charities.

Barrington Firefighters Local 1774 is hosting another 5K Road Race and Family Fun Day again this year. Mark your calendar for Sunday, June 3.

Proceeds generated from the race will be donated to local charities through the Barrington RI Firefighters Charity Fund.

“The fund was established a number of years ago for the sole purpose of providing money in the form of sponsorships and donations to various community groups and other worthy causes in and around the town of Barrington,” according to firefighter Joe Giardina. He is coordinating the race with firefighter Ted Paull.

This year’s feature charity is Heartworks in Barrington – a non-profit group created in the months and years following September 11, 2001. Heartworks helps those in the community who encounter unexpected life circumstances and provides people with assistance during challenging times.

The race will be run rain or shine starting at 10:15 am. The course starts and finishes at Barrington High School and will travel along Lincoln Avenue, Upland Way, Foote Street, Prince’s Hill Avenue, Maple Avenue, and Middle Highway.

The event is professionally timed and prizes will be awarded to top runners, said Giardina. You can view a map of the course at www.barringtonrifire.com.

“In addition to the 5K run,” said the coordinators, “we will also be having a 2-mile walk at 9:30 am as well as 50- and 100-yard children's races starting at 9 am.”

Post-event festivities include a runners' raffle, music by a DJ, refreshments, professional booths, touch a truck, the Pink Heals fire truck, children's moon bounce, a dunk tank, fire prevention demonstrations and a cookout.

Pre-event electronic registration is $12 (you can register online at www.barringtonrifire.com). Event-day registration is $15 from 8 am to 9:45 am at the high school.

Free parking will be available at Barrington High School, and refreshments donated by sponsors will be available before and after the race.
