Summer Reading Kicking Off

Barrington library's reading club -- 'Dream Big, READ! -- opens today with children's performer, registration.

"Dream Big, READ!" -- the Summer Reading Club at Barrington library -- kicks off tonight with a performance by children's singer Greg Cooney.

The show starts at 6 pm. It is open to all children ages 4 and older.

"Independent and junior readeers are encourage to participate and discover great books for summer vacation," said Lynn Burkhardt, a children's librarian. "You reading will get done while having lots of fun."

"See magicians, storytellers and puppeteers; win prizes, including free admission to exciting places; talke about your favorite books, and meet other kids," she said. "Explore the magic any mystery of night time all summer long."

Sign-ups for junior readers begin this morning at 9:30; independent readers can start signing up Tuesday, June 26, at 9:30 am. You can register for both clubs throughout the summer.

Summer Reading Clubs meet every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm, and every Saturday from 9:30 am to 4 pm.

Independent readers must read or listen to six books to receive a certificate of completion, Burkhardt said.

"In a creative, game-like atmosphere," she said, "independent readers will be asked to answer short questions pertinent to each book."

Children will receive coupons from local area attractions.

Junior readers will log sharted reading time on interactive worksheets and receie a prize for each three hours recorded up to a total of 12 hours for completion of their program.

The Summer Reading Club runs through Aug. 15. Both the independent and junior readers will end the summer with special celebrations.
