Eagles Shut Down Hawks to Stay Unbeaten

Barrington High earns top seed in RIIL playoffs with 7-0 win over Bishop Hendricken in battle of unbeatens.

Barrington High School shut down Bishop Hendricken on Friday night, Nov. 8, in Warwick to remain the only unbeaten team in Rhode Island’s top football division.

7-0 win assured the Eagles of being the top seed in Division I for the season-ending playoffs. Even if Barrington loses to its next opponent, Portsmouth High, on Friday, the team would get the top seed based on its win over the now once-beaten Hawks.

Barrington’s defense clamped down on the high-scoring Hawks, which had beaten every other team it played this year by 20 or more points, according to the Providence Journal.

The only score of the game came in the second quarter when quarterback Matt Rota hooked up with Sam Vetromile on a 2-year touchdown pass. Kyle Gibalerio’s conversion kick finished the scoring.

The Eagles defense stopped Hendricken four times on fourth-down attempts, including one late in the game when the Hawks were challenging at the Barrington 35-yard line. Barrington also stopped Bishop Hendricken one other time with an interception in the end zone.
