Meet BHS Exchange Students

Barrington High School parents association holds a meet and greet night for three foreign exchange students and their host families.

Iryna Kukharieva, Dina Benedetto and Lara Zazo seem to be settling in quite nicely in Barrington.

The three exchange students were introduced at a "meet and greet" night held by the Barrington High School parents association on Tuesday in the library. Plenty of nerves and smiles abounded.

Iryna, a junior, is from Sumy, Ukraine. Dina, a junior, is from Palestine. Lara, a sophomore, lives just outside of Madrid, Spain.

Only Lara had ever visited the U.S. before the girls arrived in Barrington about five weeks ago. She is staying with relatives by marriage -- the Zingg family, Chris, Emma and Amanda on Crossways. That makes Lara and Amanda cousins.

Iryna is staying with Michael and Michele Hurley on Chachapacasset Road. High School Principal Joe Hurley is Michael's cousin.

Dina's host family is Jamie, Diana, Ashley and Madison Clements on Glenfield Road.

Dina and Lara came to Barrington through the CIEE exchange program, known until 1994 as the Council on International Educational Exchange. It is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization.

Iryna came to Barrington through AFS Intercultural Programs, known as the American Field Service for many decades. It, too, is a nonprofit international exchange organization.
