Girls' X-C, Boys' Soccer Take Titles

Barrington's girl's cross-country team takes New England crown; soccer squad finishes unbeaten season with RI Division I championship.

Barrington High School freshman Emma McMillan led the girl’s cross-country team to a New England title Saturday, according to the Providence Journal.

And back home at Rhode Island College on Saturday, the undefeated boy’s soccer team won its third state championship in five years, according to the Providence Journal. The Eagles beat La Salle, 3-2.

McMillan placed third overall in the girls’ race with a time of 19 minutes, 7 seconds. She led Barrington to its first-ever New England championship with a 75-132 victory over Coe-Brown High of N.H. in the meet in Cumberland, Maine.

Junior Abby Livingston, who finished 15th in 19:44, junior Megan Verner-Crist, who finished 25th in 19:58, senior Fiona Paine, who ran 40th in 20:12, and junior Juliana Portelli, who finished 50th in 20:23, added to the squad’s margin of victory over Coe-Brown High.

The soccer team took its 12th championship overall in the final match of the RI Credit Union Boys’ Soccer Division 1 Championship.

Defender Matt Roberts, the tournament’s MVP, scored the game-winning goal on a free kick from about 30 yards away and assisted on one other goal. Striker Denali Sexton scored the other two goals on headers, which gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead before La Salle battled back to tie the game.

Three other Barrington players were named to the All Tournament Team besides Roberts: Sexton; senior goal-keeper Andrew Jones and junior midfielder Jozef Jennings. The teams had played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season. Barrington finished 13-0-5 on the season.
