The Rhode Island Foundation is offering grants of up to $15,000 for programs that support the physical and mental health and well being of Barrington residents through its Barrington District Nursing Association Fund.

Rhode Island nonprofit organizations that provide health care, health education or basic needs to Barrington residents are eligible to apply. Grants generally range from $1,000 to $15,000. The deadline to apply is Feb. 3, 2014.

Last year, the following recipients shared $55,000 in grants: Barrington Tap-In, the East Bay Center Inc., the East Bay Community Action Program, Friends of Barrington Senior Center, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island, the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, the VNA of Rhode Island and the Women’s Resource Center of Newport and Bristol Counties.

Established at the Foundation in 1989, the fund began in 1923 as the Barrington District Nursing Association. It ceased operation in 1968 when it merged with several other agencies to form the East Shore District Nursing Association. In 1989, the board of the former Barrington District Nursing Association voted to turn its assets over to the Foundation and create the fund that bears the organization’s name and keeps faith with its mission.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island.  In 2012, the Foundation made grants of more than $30.4 million to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.
