Town Council Tables Salary Ordinance

Barrington Town Manager Peter DeAngelis asked to prepare a complete compensation package for non-union workers by July 30 meeting.

The Town Council tabled until July 30 the ordinance that sets new salaries for Barrington’s non-union positions, including all department heads.

The councilors put off approving the ordinance after Town Councilor Bill DeWitt asked Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. to prepare a more complete look at the cost of compensation, including health and dental benefits, for information purposes only. It would not become part of the ordinance.

The vote to table the salary ordinance was unanimous.

The salary ordinance was introduced at the June 4 Town Council meeting. It lists only the base salary for each position.

The compensation method does not take into account individual employee performance. And it has no bearing on the perceived importance of each position to the town. There is no rank, said DeAngelis.

The salaries do take into account an employee's experience and qualifiations at the start of employment, which gives the town manager some flexibility in hiring workers based on the marketplace, DeAngelis said.
