Town Council Endorses 3 Recreation Projects

The Parks and Recreation Commission wants to apply for state DEM funding for the 'ball wall', hiking trail and ice skating rink repaving.

Three recreation projects were endorsed by the Barrington Town Council on Monday evening, Nov. 4, for possible state funding.

The three projects will now be submitted to the RI Department of Environmental Management for grants.

The projects include a “ball wall” at Barrington Middle School, a “walking trail” around Kids Kove Playground behind Town Hall, and the repaving of the ice skating rink on Legion Way.

East Bay Lacrosse is spearheading the effort to construct a cement “ball wall” to be used by lacrosse and other athletic organizations, according to the Parks and Recreation Commission, which has signed off on all three projects. The wall is described as a three-season facility that will allow athletes to improve their fundamentals and sharpen their hand/eye coordination.

Preliminary plans have not established a definite placement for the wall. But East Bay Lacrosse is committed to funding 65 percent of the cost, with the remaining funds to be raised from the other local athletic organizations or the state grant, according to Michele Geremia, recreation director, in a memo to Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. This project does not require any funds from the Town of Barrington.

The “walking trail” would be constructed around the back side of Kid’s Kove Playground. The trail was part of the 2007 Barrington Civic Center historic district pedestrian circulation plan done by Gates, Leighton & Associates.

This project would be 90 percent financed by a state of “Passive and Historic Park” development/recreation grant. The cost of the project would be determined by a plan to be developed by a landscape architect.

The Legion Way Rink proposal would include the repaving and painting of the rink. In addition, this proposal would allow for the addition of two more sets of lights on the opposite side of the rink.

The cost of the project is estimated at $75,000 to $152,000, according to Tim Rimoshytus. The town would pay for half.
