The Barrington Town Council will be asked next week to build another beach volleyball court at Latham Park.
The Parks and Recreation Commission voted at its meeting last Thursday, Jan. 23, to request that a second court be built at the park on Bullock’s Cove in Bay Spring, according to Michele Geremia, recreation and leisure services director.
The court would be built between the existing court and Shore Drive, Geremia said.
Workers from the public works department would be asked to excavate and fill the area with sand, she said. The recreation department already owns poles and a net for the court.
The cost to the town for the court, therefore, would be negligible, she said.
“We would definitely be interested in developing a league for regular use for the courts,” Geremia said.
Recreation commission member Patrick Sullivan, an avid beach volleyball player, suggested the construction of a second court a couple of months ago. A letter asking for feedback from more than 20 neighbors around the park was sent by the recreation commission.
Several neighbors attended last week’s meeting. The only concern raised was the impact of the courts on parking, Geremia said.
