Liquor-Law Changes Get Go Ahead

At a special meeting Wednesday morning, the Barrington Town Council introduced amendments to two liquor ordinances that will go before a public hearing on July 15.

Amendments to two of Barrington’s liquor laws were introduced and approved without changes at a special Town Council meeting Wednesday morning, July 10.

The amended ordinances now will be before a public hearing during the next Town Council meeting on Monday, July 15, which is expected to take the place of the regular August meeting, said Town Clerk Linda James.

The first amendment expands liquor license rules, regulations and restrictions to incorporate required training for servers and sellers of alcohol. It also adds penalties for not completing the required training.

The second amendment addresses possession of alcohol by minors. It incorporates fines of up to $350 and 30 days of community service as penalties and introduces the possibility of required attendance at an educational program for violators.

The ordinances are being amended for Barrington’s first Municipal Court, which is expected to holds its first session later this month to deal with all of the town's ordinances.

The July 15 meeting starts at 6:30 pm in the Barrington library auditorium with interviews of the first 8 people to apply to serve on the Charter Review Commission, said James. The Town Council would like to have 9 to 12 people to serve on that board. You can submit an application to the Town Clerk's Office.

The rest of the agenda for Monday’s meeting will not be addressed before 7 pm. It will be finalized by the end of this week.
