Another Volleyball Court, League at Latham Park?

The Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission to ask neighbors what they think about another volleyball court in the park at Bullocks Cove.

Neighbors of Latham Park in Bay Spring will be getting a post-holiday greeting from the Barrington Parks and Recreation Commission.

The board decided on Thursday evening, Dec. 19, that any additional action on a proposal to add a second outdoor volleyball court at the park should be made with some feedback from the neighbors.

Commission chairman Mike Seward suggested making the neighborly approach to determine their reaction to the proposal made to the board and the Town Council by recreation board member Patrick Sullivan, an avid beach volleyball player.

Sullivan suggested adding a second court at Latham Park to, perhaps, start “some type of program or league.”

Work to improve the park and protect it from erosion is set to start soon, Sullivan said. This might be a good time to add a second court to the contract if a volleyball program is seen as something the town wants.

“If we don’t want to do it, then we don’t need it,” said Sullivan. “We can just upgrade the one we have.”

Recreation director Michele Geremia said a volleyball program was tried at Barrington Beach a couple of years ago. It was not run last summer.

Seward said the proposed volleyball court “was put back in our court, excuse the pun, because the Town Council felt that town workers might be able to do it cheaper.”

He said the town would have to pay “prevailing wage” by adding it to the contract for the Latham Park work, which has been awarded to Wright-Pierce Engineering of Providence and East Coast Construction of Portsmouth.
