Woman, 88, 'Bamboozled' Out of Jewelry

Man in 50s, woman in 20s reportedly steal Barrington woman's jewelry while posing as roof repair workers.

A couple posing as roof-repair workers reportedly "bamboozled" a 419 County Road woman, 88, out of more than $1,000 worth of jewelry last Thursday afternoon, June 14, said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.

LaCross said a white man in his 50s and a woman in her 20s, possibly pregnant, allegedly swiped jewelry worth more $1,000 from the home.

The County Road woman told police that the younger woman kept her occupied downstairs while the man reportedly went upstairs to check her roof. When the couple left the home, the elderly woman went upstairs and found that a gold ring, a bracelet and other assorted pieces of jewelry were missing.

Police continue to investigate the alleged theft. The man was described as about 5-4 in height with a stocky build, according to the homeowner. The woman had dirty blonde hair and was introduced as the man’s daughter.

The County Road woman did not see a vehicle, police said. She reported the incident at 5:45 pm.

Man disappears from rehab facility

A 58-year-old resident of Riverwood Rehabilitation on County Road in Barrington has gone missing.

The man, who has not been seen since last Wednesday, June 13, is described as white, balding and with an unkempt gray beard. A BOLO (be on the lookout) was put out to police departments as far away as Fall River, Mass.

Anyone who might have seen a man fitting this description can contact the Barrington police department at its confidential tip line, 437-3933.

Inflatable dinghy taken from yard

A rubber inflatable dinghy with the name “GiGi” stenciled on the side was reported stolen to Barrington police from the front yard of a Simmons Road home last Tuesday afternoon, June 12.

A white man in a pick-up truck was seen stopped outside the house by the woman resident, according to police. Trash pick-up day was the next day in that neighborhood, police said. The theft is being investigated with that in mind.
