Teens Charged With Breaking Into Barrington Middle School Through Grate

Two boys, 15 and 16, captured outside the school after motion and sound detectors alerted police to their illegal presence in the school.

Two Barrington teens face breaking and entering charges after they entered the Barrington Middle School through a plywood-covered grate that led to the boiler room last Friday evening, Nov. 29.

The boys, ages 15 and 16, allegedly broke into the school around 6:30 pm. They reportedly crawled through the grate and then made their way to the middle school library, according to Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.

Motion and noise detectors set off alarms with Sonitrol, an alarm company. Five police officers responded.

The boys left the school through a rear door with the police officers waiting outside, said LaCross. The boys ran toward toward Lincoln Avenue through a wooded area near the school where they were captured.

One of the boys stopped after police yelled for him to halt. The other boy kept running and stumbled over a knee-high stone wall and fell into heavy brush while trying to escape.

The boys allegedly stole an unopened box containing an Apple TV chip processor from the library, LaCross said. It was stuck inside the older teen's hat, which fell off when he fell over the wall.

The actual charge for each boy is breaking and entering a public building with felonious intent. The 16-year-old also was charged with possession of marijuana after police found a plastic bag and drug paraphernalia with the substance in a backpack he was carrying.

One of the teens was released to his mother. The other teen was taken to his home by a police officer.  Both were given dates  to appear in Family Court to face the charges.
