Identity Stolen to Get Satellite TV

Theft of Barrington woman's identity also used to get an American Express account.

Barrington police received two reports of identify theft over last weekend -- one to get a satellite TV network.

The first report came in at 5:27 pm on Saturday, Jun 23. A Caldarone Street woman, 40, said she was trying to start a subscription to the DISH TV network, according to police.

A representative for the satellite provider asked the woman for her Social Security number. The woman was told that it was already on file with the company and linked to another subscriber.

Then on Sunday afternoon at around 2:28, police received a report from a woman, 59, who walked in to the Public Safety Building to say her identity was stolen to set up a credit card account.

The woman said she learned that her identity was used to open an American Express account when the company contacted her because the account has an unpaid balance of $4,900, police said. The woman told them she has never had an American Express account.
