Firefighters Go Hairless for Cancer

Seven Barrington firefighters have a lot less hair to comb today.

The firefighters had their heads shaved on Wednesday night for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity which raises money to fund research to find cures for childhood cancers. 

The St. Baldrick's event was held at McFadden's Restaurant in Providence. The Barrington Fire Department has been involved for several years under the leadership of firefighter Matt Kane.

"He's the team leader," said Pat Dyer, who shed his locks on Wednesday evening.

St. Baldricks funds the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers, according to its website. It sponsors hundreds of head-shaving nights around the country each year.

Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, a child’s best hope for a cure, according to the website. Since the Foundation’s first grants as an independent charity in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has funded more than $78 million in childhood cancer research.
