The training is an integral part of the fire department's effort to make Barrington a “Heartsafe” community, said EMT Director Scott Carroll. Barrington recently became the sixth community in Rhode Island to get the designation.

“The Heartsafe communities is a program designed to promote survival from sudden out of hospital cardiac arrest,” Carroll said. “It is a general concept focused on strengthening the “chain of survival” established by the American Heart Association. It recognizes communities to improve their system for preventing sudden cardiac arrest from becoming irreversible death.”
