Cop Puts Down Suffering Deer

A Barrington Police officer was in the tough position of having to use his department-issued weapon to put down a deer that was suffering on the side of the road after being hit by a car.

Barrington Police Chief John M. LaCross said an officer was dispatched to County Road at around 7:44 a.m. on Friday for a report of an injured deer.

LaCross said the deer was severely injured with two broken legs that were nearly severed. The animal kept trying to run away but was unable to get up.

The officer reported that the state Department of Environmental Management was notified and they said they'd respond. But as time wore on and the deer continued to struggle, police decided to end the animal's life to put a stop to the suffering.

"It was trying to stand up and it couldn't," LaCross said. "It was a poor animal that just wanted to survive."
