Barrington Police Nab Woman for 'Check Kiting'

East Providence woman allegedly withdrew thousands from a bank account with fraudulent deposits, including a withdrawal in Barrington.

Barrington police arrested last week an East Providence woman, 41, who was wanted for “check kiting.”

The woman, Lashawnda L. Dennis, of 1086 South Broadway, was wanted on warrants for check fraud from Barrington and East Providence, said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.

She allegedly opened an account at Citizens Bank with a fraudulent check written against an account in another bank and then made thousands of dollars in withdrawals in cash.

Dennis allegedly made approximately $27,500 in fraudulent deposits to the account, to which Social Security checks were deposited, said LaCross. She opened that account in November of 2012.

She then withdrew thousands of dollars in April, September and October last year from the account at two Citizens Bank branches, including $9,100 from the bank branch on County Road in Barrington.

The warrants for her arrest were issued last November after an investigation by bank fraud officials.
